Description

Patented Qet. 7, 1924.
UNITED STATES 1,511,129 PATENT OFFICE.
JAMIE MoKNIGl-IT, QF LINCQLNTQN, NOB/TH. GAB-QLlNA.
ADJUSTABLE BANDEAU.
tain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Bandeaux, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to adjustable bandeaux for ladies and misses hats, which bandeau is designed to receive the head of the wearer and bear thereagainst with elastic pressure so as to maintain the hat upon the head ofl the wearer without uncomfortable pressure, but at the same time providing so wide a bearing as to hold the hat firmly in position.
The invention comprises a straight band or bias material sewn together at the ends and enclosing in its outer or marginal edge a wire conforming to standard head size measurements designed to be applied in position at the sweat band location of a hat, to be held in such position by means of pins, double wire prongs or fasteners encircling a portion of the wire marginal edge of the band. The wire may constitute a stiff or semi-stiff ring o-f suitable material with the pins or wire prongs traversing the material of the body of the .hat above the wire and bent in such manner as to hold their position. The object of the invention in bandeau, is to provide a bandeau which fits to and from the base of the head size of the hat body, in a partially upright position to the actual head size of the wearer, thereby forming, as it were, a continuous extension o-f the hat body into the smaller headsize of the wearer.
That edge of the band remote from the inserted wire is gathered or shirred to form a hem in which is embedded a ila-t elastic band which may be under such tension as to contract or pucler the material of the band, permitting extension and contraction of the inner edge of the band and such extension or contraction may be varied by drawing the band tighter or by loosening it, with the result that there is imparted to the head receiving band a partially upright position which is varied by the force exerted on the head of the wearer but without discomfort thereto.
When the hat is applied to the head of the wearer the first action is to expand the elastic portion of the band thus making the hat Serial No. 551,498.
cling tightly to the head of the wearer and not only produce a tight fit but become snugly fast thereto because of the broad bearing produced due to the width of the elastic band. The bandeau will accommodate itself to heads of different sizes and the hat may be removed from the head without effort.
The invention comprises a bandeau constituting a head size lfitting in its make up and comprises double wire prongs by which the bandeau can be adjusted to the hat body without sewing and also adjustable to head sizes by simply tightening or loosening of the flat elastic on the inner edge of the bandeau and tying into position.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following de tailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, with the understanding that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings, but may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modifications markno material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front to rear section through a hat equipped with the invention and showing a human head associated therewith with the showing in broken lines.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bandeau construction employed in connection with the invention.
Fig. 3 is a sect-ion o-n the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, but illustrated on a larger scale.
Fig. 4f is a plan view of a bias strip em ployed.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a ring employed.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a hat band or bandeau 1 made up of an ap propriately shaped band having at its outer edge a hem or return fold 2 enclosing a wire 3 which may be actually or substantially continuous and of a size precisely that of the inner wall of the hat at the sweat band location.
The inner edge of the bandeau l is returned upon itself upon its outer side and encloses a flat elastic strip 5 sewed into the band l.
The elastic strip may be normally under a certain amount of tension so as to more or less pucker the inner edge of the bandeau l and the elastic strip 5 may be long enough and carried through the Walls of 'the bandeau to permit the strip to be tied to itself as indicated at 6. By this means the elastic band may be made longer or shorter as co1`1- ditions demand. l
Extending through the bandeau above the Wire reinforcement 3 are sta-ples 9 of suflicient length to continue through the brim of the hat and fasten the bandeau thereto. The staples 9 have their heads bent over, as shown inl Fig. 3, so that they partially surround the Wire .3, thus When they are passed through the brim the bent portion of the 3 staple draws the Wire lirmly against the body 4of the hat.
"When the parts are assembled and the bandeau is located in the hatr the staples 9 are forced through the material of the hat and are bent upon themselves to constitute fasteners. These fasteners may coact With the body of the hat so as to be hidden from sight and hence not be obtrusive in appeardDCe.
When the bandeau l isinsjtalled in the hat, the lower edge of the bandeau is held against the inner Wall of the crown portion of the hat by the staples 9 While the upper edge of the bandeau is drawn by the elastic band 5 as reacted upon by the bow-knot 6 into an upwardly directed, inwardly inclined position, which Will inter'pose irto the `path of the head of the wearer inserted into the hat, bearing upon the head of the Wearer With a central pressure tending to holdthe hat in positionfon the head of the wearer While the band will yield to a certain extent making such pressure` unobtrusive but at the same time effectively holding the hat against displacement. `What is claimed is A n An adjustablel bandeau for hats, comprise ing a band of suitable material hav-ing its edges turned back upon' itself to provide upper and lower hems, a Wire enclosed in the loWer of said hems and sur-rounding said band, an elastic band enclosed in the upper p of saidf hems and having its endsr pass'ed through and tied upon the outside of the hem, and' vstaples passed through the body of the band above said Wire and adapted to be passed through the body of the Ahat for securing the bandeau in position,`said staples having' their heads bent over to one side so that they partially surround the WireL and draw the same closely against the body of the hatin Whichplaced. y
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
