ADJUSTABLE HAT-LINING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8, 191%.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERIC GRUNIG, a citizen of Switzerland, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, and MAXIME L. VAN HUELE, a citizen ofBelgium, and a resident of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and.State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Hat-Lining, of which the following is a full, clean-andexact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved hat lining arranged to permit of readily fitting the lining to hats of different sizes, different crown depths and different shapes, and to enhance the appearance of the interior of the hat.
In order to produce the desired result, use is made of a crown, the side portion of which is formed of flexible material such as silk, satinet or other similar material, cut on the bias, to allow the side portion to give in any direction and thus fit hats of difierent diameters, depths and shapes. Use is also made of an adjustable hoop held in a hem formed in the base of the crown and a fiat, inelastic, reinforced top, to which the upper edge of the side portion is secured, the hem being adapted to be fastened to-the inside of the hat. Use is further made of a top provided on the under side with a visible ring trimming at the junction of the side portion and the top.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the adjustable hat lining with part of the hem broken out to show the adjustable hopp;
Fig. 2 is a reduced sectional side elevation of the adjustable hat lining in position in the hat;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged inverted plan view of a portion of the hat lining; and I Fig. 4 is an'enlargedsectional side elevation of the same on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
The crown of the adjustable hat lining is provided with a side portion 10 made of silk, satinet, or similar flexible fabric, which is cut at a bias and the ends fastened together by a row of stitches 11, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1. The lower edge of the side por- 13 to the insideof the hat 14, as plainly in;
dicated in Fig. 2. In the hem 12 is arranged a hoop 15 of wire or similar material having its ends terminating in loops 16 and 17 slidingly engaging the adjacent end portion of the hoop 15 to allow the hoop to fit the corresponding sizeof the hat 14. It will also be noticed that by the use of this'hoop 15 the lower'edge of the side portion 10 is reinforced to insure a proper hold of the hat when in position on the wearers head.
The top 20 of the hat lining is formed of a piece of silk, satinet or other similar material, usually the same as the one of which the side portion 10 is made, and the upper side of the top 20 is reinforced by a piece of buckram 21 or other similar reinforcing material. A trimming 22 is formed of a piece of doubled-up fabric with a core inserted in the band thereof and with the margins interposed between the outwardly extending margin 25 of the side portion 10 and the margin 26 of the top 20, the several marginal portions being fastened together by stitches 27 as plainly indicated in the drawings. It will be noticed that the trimming 22 is preferably in contrast with the side portion 10 and the top 20 so as to give a neat appearance to the inside of the hat when the lining is in position in the hat 14.
In practice the side portion 10 and the top 20 are of black or dark material while the trimming 22 is of a white or light material to enhance the contrast between the parts.
The top 20 is considerably less in size than the face of the side portion 10 which latter is gathered at the upper end, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1, to permit the side portion to give in any direction.
It will be noticed that by making the side portion 10 and its hem 12 of a flexible material cut at a bias, the said side portion and its hem stretch in. any direction to permit of accurately fitting the hat lining into hats of difi'erent sizes, different crown depths and diiferent shapes.
By making the hoop 15 adjustable it readily adapts itselfto the size of the hem 12.
It is understood that when the hoop 15 is extended to the limit of the hem 12 then the base of the hat lining is of maximum size, and by more or less contracting the hoop 15 creased to the size of the hat on which the' lining is to be used.
Having thus described our invention, .We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As a new article of manufacture, a hat lining comprising a crown, the side portion of which is formed of a flexible material cut at a bias, the lower edge of the said side portion being formed into a hem for attachment to the inside of a hat, an adjustable hoop held in the said hem, a fiat top formed of an inner piece of flexible material similar to that of the crown and anouter reinforcing 15 piece of buckram, to which top the upper the top with the said side portion and con- 20 trasting in color with the side and top.
