CAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented May 2a, 1918.
Application filed January 12, 1918. Serial No. 211,646.
Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to caps.
The feature of the invention is the construction of the cap, particularly of the bottom or head-fitting portion thereof, whereby the cap is self-ad3usting and adapted to fit within a relatively wide range a persons head irrespective of the so-called hat size. This feature of the invention enables the dealer to furnish a cap of accurate fit to his customer and obviates the necessity of keeping in stock caps of various sizes, as has heretofore obtained. The invention also enables the dealer to carry a stockv of larger varieties of designs of caps or of different materials.
Our invention in its most preferred form comprises a bottom or head-fitting portion formed of the outer material cut on the bias and elastic fabric secured at spaced intervals, as by several rows of relatively long stitching, extending over a part or whole of such bias-cut material, whereby the cap is adapted to fit any size of head within a relatively wide range of sizes, and for all particular sizes of head the outer material is devoid of gatherings, folds, or the like, thereby presenting a smooth external appearance of the outer cloth and symmetrical presentation of the design of the outer material. In such preferred form of the invention, the sweat band may extend over the peak or vizor portion of the cap, and beyond the same along the bottom of the cap to such extent as may be desired. The line ing, particularly the portion thereof .co-extensive, with the whole or part of the biascut outer material, is also cut on the bias and stitched to the outer material, for example to an inwardly folded stitched edge of the outer material. I
Gther features and objects of the invention will be more fully jmderstood from the following description ,and the accompanyin drawings, in which Iigure 1 1s a bottom plan view of one embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same; and
Fig. 3 is a detail cross sectional elevation indicating a bottom portion of the-cap and the relation of the outer material, elastic fabric and lining.
The invention is applicable to all types and styles of caps, such as the four-quartered, or six or. eight-quartered or single piece, or eight clamps, etc., and the cap may e provided with any desired-style of vizor, or (peak, or with such attached parts as ear an head flaps, etc, as may be desired. The head portion of the cap is indicated generally at 1. The vizor i s/indicated at 2 and the sweat-band at 3, stitchedto the inner edge of the vizor and outer material by stitches 4. The cap proper may be lined or unlined, as desired.
In the specific embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, self-adjusting portion 5' is indicated as extending along the bottom or head-fitting portion of the cap' from the seam 6 on one side, to the seam 7 on the other side. Such portion 5 is cut on the bias, by which term bias we include the cutting of the material at any angle relatively to the warp and Woof of the material.
\ The elastic fabric is indicated at 8 and is shown extending from the point 9 along the hat fitting portion of the cap to the point 10. Such elastic fabric 8 is stitched .or otherwise attached at spaced intervals to arc 6, 7 as for example for an arc indi-.
cated generally by the arcuate length of the elastic material 8, i. 6., from point 9 to point 10.
If desired, the lining 12 may be provided, and secured in the cap as by stitching to the inwardly turned edge 13 of the outer material 5. The lining '12 is preferably cut on the bias for the whole or a portion of the same co-extensive with the bias-cut outer material 5 of the cap.
The cap embodying our invention is advantageous in that it fits accurately any.persons head of anyv size Within a relatively wide range of so-called hat sizes, the fit in each instance being an accurate fit, Whether worn by the individual loosely about the upper part of the head or tightly when e e peemeee ef abhe ee s end we eiz za 0f needs, the pemien 505 the ember mmeimfl in eeeflmiey 120 the heed e1 Weeeee emeefiah end deveid ei :Ee'ide er the like, wieh euedieeuriemg fee symmetry ex deene m e13 the enter meeemel; The 1e miner; ee'lvemegeeue m that pel isleee emeeeh eeel eeeureee fit fsherehy improving eemfeeb 01 {she Weeeer 1 As ilfiieeeed above, many changes emf. medifieeticre mey be made the ieveeeiee Wi'filbOllt frem'lphe epirieef @143 in vemeiee as defieeel by the epgeended eleimew We eieim: w L A eep Teevmg en echueiebie eeeelee eempeisme" Lalfifififll we on the bias eleetie feerie meeeriel extending everat ieese e pemee e1 eeld blew-cue materiel-u 2.
