To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, DANIEL Koon, a citizen'of the United States, and resident of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Hat Linings, of which .the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like arts.

This invention relates to hat linings and articularly to hat linings for use in ladies ats.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide a novel hat linin which has incorporated in the side portionthereof at the rear a length of elastic cord or tape which is secured at its ends to the linin at points which are more widely separate than the normal length of the tape or cord, whereby a short elastic rib is formed onthe wall of the lining at the rear of the hat, which will fit under the base of the head and thus firmly retain the hat in place.

In order to give an understanding of my invention I have illustrated in the drawings a selected embodiment thereof which will now be described after which the novel features will be pointed out in the appended claim.

In the drawings 1 indicates a ladys hat which may have any suitable or usual shape, the front of the hat being at the right in Fig.1 and the rear at the left.

' My im roved lining comprises theusual side portion 2 and. top or crown portion 3, these two portions being sewed together around the periphery of the crown as shown at 4. The lining is secured to the hat in the usual way by sewing the lower edge 5 of the side portion thereof to the hat.

The present improvements consist in forming a fold 6 in the side wall of the lining at the rear of the hat and placing 1n said fold an elastic cord or tape 7. This fold is preferably retained in shape by stitching the two sides of the fold together as shown at 8 thus making a channel in'i which the elastic cord 7 is located. This elastic cord is in its normal unstretched condition considerably shorter than the normal length of the fold and after the cord is inserted the ends 9 thereof are secured to the linn by stitching 10 or in some other suit- 1 ab le way. Inasmuch as the normal length of the tape 7 in its unstretched condition is less than the distance between the ends 11 of the fold the result will be that the elastic nature of the cord or tape will bring the points 11 of the lining toward each other thus producing gathers 12 therein.

The result of this construction is that the lining has an elastic rib formed by the fold 6 and tape 7, which extends across the back portion of the lining and which reduces the normal interior dimensions of the lining in the zone where the rib is located.

In placing the hat on the head the elastic rib 6 will be drawn down over the back of the head and because of its elasticity it will stretch as necessary to fit over the hair. The elasticity of the tape 7 causes the rib to hug the head tightly at the back and thus to hold the hat securely'in place.

There is an advantage in having the elastic portion of the lining at the back of the hat only, for thisallows the front part of the hat to rest'against the front of the head while at the same time it causes the back 'of the lining to fit tightly around the back of the head. This holds the hat much more satisfactorily than if the elastic tape extended entirely around the lining.

Another advantage inherent in the invention is that it obviates the necessity of making ladies hats of different sizes as has 4 been commonly done up to the. nresent time. With my invention it is possible to make hats of one size and then to rely upon the lining to give the hat the size required for any person. -In fact, with this improved lining the same hat will fit equally well a person having. a large head or quantity of hair or a person having bobbed hair'.
