Description
J. PARMLEY.
HATBRIM STIFFENER.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 12, I920.

INVENTOR ATTORNEY John Pm- "mkeY,
UNITED STATES YP ATE T oFF cE,
JOHN PARMLEY, ongrn'rnnson; New JERSEY;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PARMLEY, a citizen of the United States, residin at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and tate of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Brim Stifieners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a stiffener for more or less flexible brims of hats, as felt hats, so constructed as to perform its intended function efficientlyan'd yet bepractically inconspicuous. My invention contemplates a hat-brim stiffening device including a body part adapted to be secured to and having a piercing portion adapted to penetrate the crown-including part of a hat and a brimstifiening part proper rigidly. projecting from the body part, the piercing portion by penetrating the crown-including part of the hat being adapted to obtain substantial purchase or hold on the hat. My invention further contemplates a hat-brim stiffening device formed of a piece of attenuated stiff material, as a piece of wire, the end portions of said piece being curved to conform with the contour of a hat crown and being adapted to be secured to the hat and the intermediate portion being a bend projecting outwardly from and joining said end portions and forming the stifiening part proper of the device.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 shows a hat in perspective, partly broken away, and provided with the improved hat stiffener;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of what is shown in Fig. 1, taken just above the hat-brim and the band or ribbon 6 being removed;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showin a different form of the stiffener; and,
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4=4, Fi .2.
The drawing shows a soft felt hat by way of illustration, a being the crown of the hat,
6 its brim, in the present case having its edge 0 folded upwardly and back, d the sweat band stitched to the hat in the usual way where the brim joins the crown, and e the exterior ornamental band or ribbon.
In that form of my invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4 the brim stiffening device is composed of a piece of wire whose extremities, f j, which together form the body part of the device, project in opposite dlrections utationaiediociober 12, 1920'. [Serial nki eifansg' im'rsnrm s'rIFFENEBa and are curved substantially to the contour of a hat-crown, theintermediate part of the wire being shaped to form an outwardly projecting bend g which is preferably flaring in form. The hat is provided with two holes h 71, inthe crown, at the front thereof, through which the legs or extremities f f of the stiffening device project, the said legs lying between and being held between and by the crown and the sweat band d. The
bend or brim-stiffening part proper g rests upon the brim (and it may be bent so as in side elevation to conform therewithsee Fig. fl) and may be secured thereto by stitching 2.
In that form of the invention which is shown in Fig. 3 a piece of wire is bent to form the legs k 70, which compose the body part of the device, and theintermediate bend or brim-stiffening part proper Z, all substantially the same as in the form first described, excepting that the ends of the legs or extremities k are bent inwardly in the form of hooksm. In this form of the device of the legs 70 k embrace the crown,
and their hooks are inserted through holes provided for them in the crown, as shown, the bend Z resting on the hat-brim the same as in the form first described and being secured thereto by stitching a. If desired, the bend or hat-stifi'ening part proper of the device may be covered by a suitable piece a body part adapted to be secured to and having a piercing portion adapted to penetrate the crown portion of a hat and a brimstifi'ening part proper rigidly projecting from the body part.
2. A hat-brim stiffening device including a body part adapted to be secured to the crown portion of a hat and a brim stiffening part proper rigidly projectingfrom the body part, said body part comprising a pair of piercing members curved to the contour of a hat crown and ada ted to penetrate said crown-including portlon.
3. A hat-brim stiffening device formed of a piece of attenuated stiff material, the end Specification ofLetters Patent. Pzttfitd May 2 1, 19:21.. I
portions of said piece being curved to conform with the contour of a hat crown and being adapted to be secured to the hat and the intermediate port-ion being a bend projecting outwardly from and joinin said end portions and forming the sti ening part proper of the device. v
4. A hat-brim stiffening device formed of attenuated stiff material and including a pair of legs curved to conform with the con- 10 tour of a hat crown and brim-stiffening means projecting from said legs, the device being adapted to be secured to a hat with the legs substantially concentric with the crown of the hat and the stiffening means 15 extendin across the brim thereof.
Intestunony whereof I afiix m iilgnature. JOHN P EY.
