To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADoLr HoMBnnG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in fastening devices for womens hats and as its primary object aims to provide a fastener which shall be of extremely simple construction, cheap to manufacture, and which may be firmly engaged with the hair by a partial rotation of the hat to which it is attached.

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a hat fastener comprising an annular band or rim formed of any suitable material and carrying a plurality of hair engaging prongs which may be inserted into the hair or withdrawn therefrom by a rotation of the rim in the proper direction.

Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a hat fastener of this type, which will also act as a bande-au.

With these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a sectional view through a hat, showing in elevation, the fastener positioned in the crown thereof, Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the fastener, Fig. 3 is a section taken on the plane of line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4: is a section taken on the plane of line 4-4: of Fig. 2'.

In the preferred embodiment of my invention, I provide an annular band or rim 5 which is preferably formed of flat metal. The band is of such a size as to fit within the crown of a hat, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and is provided with a plurality of perforations 6 which are useful when Stitching the fastener in its proper position. The rim carries a plurality of hair engaging portions 7 which extend in the same general direction and which are formed by strips of metal cut or stamped from the rim.

To form each of the prongs, an elongated strip of metal is stamped from the rim and leaves a circumferential slot 8 which is pointed at its forward end, as indicated by the numeral 9. T he metal which forms the prong remains attached to the rim at one end of the slot 8, and is bent angularly, as indicated by the numeral 10, and is then extended, as at 11, essentially parallel to the surface of the rim to provide the main portion of the prong. To form a prong which will enter the hair easily, each strip of metal which is stamped from the rim is bent along the line of its longitudinal center so as to provide a prong of double thickness, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The prongs are preferably wavy and have their free extremities extended downwardly and inwardly so as to give them an entering tendency within the hair as the rim is rotated.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that my improved hat fastener is of a very simple construction so as to permit of its being very cheaply manufactured. It will also be obvious that a rotation of the hat in a clockwise direction will cause the hair engaging prongs to enter the hair and become firmly embedded therein. When it is desired to remove the hat, a rotation in a reverse direction will cause the prongs to withdraw from the hair and permit of the hat being removed.

My improved fastener is shaped similar to the common types of bandeaux and may be so secured to the hat as to perform the function of a bandeau in addition to its primary function as a securer. A fastener of this type is entirely hidden from view, firmly secures a hat in position, and in no way endangers others as the long hat pins now so commonly used.

It is to be understood that while I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to this exact construction, combina tion, and arrangement of parts, but may make such changes as will fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A hat fastener comprising a flat rim adapted to be secured within the crown of a hat, and a plurality offhair engaging prongs rigidly secured to the underside of said rim, the prongs extending essentially circumferentially of the rim in the same direction in spaced relation to the under side thereof, the extremities of the prongs being bent downwardly, rotation of the hat in one direction causing the prongs to be embedded within the hair of the wearer.

A hat fastener comprisingan annular bandformed of flat material and adapted to be secured in the crown of a hat, a plurality of; hair engaging prongs stamped from said band and remaining attached thereto at their rear ends, the prongs extending essentially. circumferentially ofthe band in .the same direction, being spaced from the under side thereof, and having their extremities bent downwardly, rotation of the hat in one direction causing the prongs to enter the hair, and rotation in the reverse direction causing the prongs to be withdrawn from the hair.
