To all whom it may) concern:

Be it known that I, XVI'LLIAM JOSEPH ANDERSON, a subject of the King of England, residing at- 1' MeadowAvenue, Hyde, in the county of Chester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in or Relating to Hat Shields or Pads, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hygienic hat and cap shields or pads of the type which comprises a piece or strip of felt, or the like softand preferably absorbentsubstance,

(hereinafter, for convenience of reference, designated felt) and a backing or frame of celluloid or other suitable material, such a pad being adapted to be placed on the inside of the front portion of a hat, namely against the leather or like band of same, for the purpose of absorbing the perspiration from the forehead of the wearer, and preventing soiling of the hat, and also ensuring greater cleanliness and comfort to the wearer.

Hitherto, in such a shield or pad the felt has been permanently or non-detachably secured to its backing or frame, conse quently when the formerbecomes soiled it is necessary to renew bothjfelt and frame. Detachable felt pads without frames, are of course, well known. V

The present invention has for its object to obviate such defect, and broadly'consists in the combination of a backing or frame of any suitable construction, and adapted for permanent or detachable attachment to an internal hat leather, and a strip of felt secured in a readily attachable and detachable manner to said backing or frame either directly or, preferably, by means of a carrier piece which may be stitched to the felt.

Said backing or frame is preferably con structed of springy material, such as celluloid or sheet steel, wherefrom is struck or punched a tongue or a plurality of series of tongues which, when positioned behind the internal leather of a hat, automatically brings or bring the bot-tom edge of the pad into correct position, i. e., flush or thereabouts with the bottom edge of the leather.

I will further describe my inventionwith the aid of the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings which illustrates, by way of example only, one mode of embodying same.

By the engagement of said projections of the backing or frame in the slits of the carrier piece, the felt'is detachably secured to the frame, so that when a felt has become soiled it (together with its carrier) may be readily removed from the frame and a new one fitted.

On said frame bar i there is secured a sheet metal clip Z the prong or spike ends Z whereof are bent at right angles.

When the sheath or pad is positioned in a hat m, due to the flexibility of frame f, it conforms to the curved shape or configuration of the leather 4%, the frame tongue 9 is disposed behind the leather, and any tendency which the celluloid may have to curl is counteracted-by the en agement of the end locking hooks h with t e top of leather n; the prongs Z .of clip Z enter the leather, and are maintained therein solely by the spring of the frame, and thus the pad is firmly and ther alternative arrangement, holes may be provided in the carrier piece I) to receive stud-like projections punched out of or secured to frame f; in this latter construction frame 7 might advantageously be permanently attached to the hat leather n, as owing to the facility with which said backing piece may be snapped on the frame 7 there will be no occasion to disturb the latter.

WVhen frame 7 is made of material such as sprin steel, teeth Z for engagement with the hat leather n, are struck out of the material of the frame itself.

If, desired, in order to provide for the fitment of apad to hat leathers of varying depths, additional slits arranged parallel with (Z, (Z, 6, 6, may be provided in the felt carrier piece 6.

As a convenient mode-of detachably connecting felt a directly to the backing of frame f illustrated in the drawing i. e. without a carrier piece) double slits are formed in the felt, frame projections j, j, is, is, of appropriate length being threaded through same.

Having now described my invention and what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis:-

1. A hat shield comprising in combination, a backing piece adapted for attachment toan internal hat leather, a strip of felt, a carrier piece secured to said felt, stud like projections provided on said backing piece and holes formed in said carrier piece adapted to receive said stud-like projections of the backing piece.

2. A hat shield comprising, in combination, a resilient backing pieceadapted for attachment to an internal hat leather lock-' ing piece, and holes'formed. in said carrier piece adapted to receive said stud-like proj ections of the backing piece.

4. A hat shield comprising, in combination, a backing pipe whereon is provided a tongue adapted to be positioned behind an internal hat leatherconstructed of springy material and on the ends whereof are created locking members for engaging the hat leather, a strip of felt, and means whereby said strip of felt is secured in a readily attachable and detachable manner to said backing piece.

5. A hat shield comprising in combination a backing piece whereon is provided a tongue adapted to be positioned behind an internal hat leather--constructed of s-pringy material and on the ends whereof are created locking members, a strip of felt, a carrier piece secured to said felt, stud-like projections provided on said backing piece, and holes formed in said carrier adapted to receive said stud-like projections of the backing piece.
