Be it known that I, ALBERT A. FAIRBANKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Eye- Shield, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to eye-shields, and has for its objects to produce a device of this character applicable for'and susceptible of ready attachment to hats and one in which the shield may be quickly adjusted relative to the eyes as circumstances require or removed when desired.

To these ends the invention comprises the novel details of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a perspective view illustrating the device applied to a hat. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the device removed. Fig. 3 is asection on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are detail perspective views of another form of shield, showing the same in different positions.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a hat, and 2 its sweat band or leather, said parts being of the usual or any preferred construction, inasmuch as they constitute no part of the present invention.

My improved device comprises as a whole an attaching member or section 8, a shield 4, and a connecting element or device 5, connecting the shield with the member 3.

The member 3 is preferably in the form of a sheet or plate of celluloid or other suitable flexible material removably attached by fastening devices 6 to the sweat-band 2, said plate having disposed over its surface a series of rows of perforations 7, designed for engagement by the connecting device 5, as will more fully hereinafter appear.

The shield 4 is preferably of the form herein shown and composed of celluloid, which may be colored or tinted, as desired, it being understood, however, that the shield may be made of paper, metal, or other suitable material.

The connecting device 5 is composed, preferably, of a pair of comparatively narrow strips of thin spring metal laid one upon the other and riveted, as at 8, at a point adjacent to their normally lower ends to form a springclip 9, in which the shield 4c is removably seated, the device 5 being bent outward at an obtuse angle at a point above and adjacent to the clip 9, whereby the shield will extend outward at the proper inclination above the eyes. The strips above the rivet 8 constitute a clip 10, which receives the member 3, the outer strip being provided at its upper end with a hook 11, designed to engage the perforations 7 whereby the shield may be readily adjusted upward or downward and fixed in its adjusted position. At this point it is to be noted that the member 3 is secured at its upper outer corners, thus enabling it to be readily bent outward from the sweat-band for insertion into the clip and for readily engaging the hook 11 with the perforations. It is also to be observed that the device 5 may be moved back and forth longitudinally of the plate 3 for bringing the shield 4 to position for protecting the eyes from side light and that when desired the member 5 may be readily detached from plate 3 or that the shield 4 may be removed from clip 9.

In Figs. 4;, 5, and 6 I have illustrated adifferent form of embodiment of the invention and in which the shield A is carried by a flexible connecting element 5', in turn secured to the inner band or leather of the cap by means of an attaching member 3'. The shield 4: is practically identical in construction and operation with that heretofore described, except that it is provided witha pair of spaced openings or slots 12, through which the connecting element 5 in the form of a suitable length of tape is looped, the member 3 in this instance being in the form of an ordinary roundhead fastener inserted through the ends of the tape and the sweat-leather 2.

In Fig. i I have shown the shield folded out to operative position and in Fig. 5 turned back into the hat in the position which it will ordinarily occupy when not in use. In Fig.

6 it is shown as folded inward beneath the sweat-leather 2, it being understood, of course, that in practice the shield will when in use oocupy the position of Fig. 4 and when not in use either of the positions illustrated in the other figures.

From the foregoing it will be seen that I produce a device of simple construction which will be eflicient in operation and one which may be readily manipulated for meeting the various contingencies which may arise during its use. In attaining these ends it is to be understood that I do notlimit myself to the precise details herein set forth, inasmuch as minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with a hat, of a perforated member associated therewith, a connecting device adjustably engaging the memher, and a shield carried by the device.

2. The combination with-a hat, of a perforated sheet associated therewith, an adjustable connecting device provided with a hook for engaging the perforations, and a shield carried by the device.

3. The combination with a hat, of a perforated member associated therewith, a connecting device comprisinga pair of plates designed to receive said member between them,

one of said plates being provided with ahook for engaging the perforations, and a shield carried by the device.

4. The combination with a hat, of a perforated member associated therewith, a connecting device comprising a pair of plates designed to adjustably receive said member between them, one of said plates being provided with means for engaging the perforations, and a shield carried by the device.

5. The combination with a hat, of a perforated member associated therewith, an adjustable connecting device provided with means for engaging the perforations, a clip carried by said device, and a shield removably engaged with the clip.

6. The combination with a hat, of a perforated member associated therewith, a device adjustably connected with said member and having means for engaging the perforations, and a shield carried by said device.
