To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ERNEST J. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Eye-Shades and Fans, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to a combined eyeshade and fan.
The object of the invention is to provide an eye-shade in the form of a fan having a notch in the top edge of its blade or body adapted to center said edge within the lower clip of a double clamp; the other or upper clip being adapted to engage a hat brim and hold the fan parallel with the under side thereof. This object I accomplish by the construction shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a side elevation of a hat with the double clamp in place; Fig. 2, is a perspective, with the clamp and eye-shade or fan in place; Fig. 3, is a perspective of the double clamp; Fig. 4, is a perspective of the fan or eye-shade.
A, designates the combined eye-shade and fan formed of any suitable materials and having a handle A. The top edge of the fan or shadeA, is concaved for the curvature of the brim and has a notch a, in its middle portion for a purpose to be presently described.
The eye-shade or fan is attached to a hat by means of a double clamp comprising a fiat body B, having at its outer end a highly curved or arched clip B, extending at its free end toward the middle of the upper side of the body while from the opposite or inner end of the body B, extends a more elongated clip B the free end of which extends forward of the middle of the lower side of the body B. The body B, is further provided with a small auxiliary spring tongue B which is preferably struck from the body though it may be separately formed and attached if desired. This spring tongue B extends down within the lower clip B and projects at its free end toward the outer .end of the body B. The fan blade A, is
inserted between the clip B and body B,
and also under the tongue B with its notch a straddling the said tongue so that the fan will be held from lateral movement. The upper clip B, will now be engaged with a hat brim as shown in Fig. 2. The clip B is made with considerable arch or curvature so as to fit over brims having a curled edge without injuring them.
The fan may be used for advertising purposes, if desired, and since it may be readily attached to a hat brim in a moment it will prove a very useful device at all sorts of outdoor events.
It will be noticed that the free end of the lower clip B extends nearly to the outer end of the body B while the spring tongue B is at the opposite end and thus the fan blade will receive the maximum amount of support,
What I claim, is:
1. The combination with an eyeshade or fan, of a double clamp provided with an upper rearwardly extending curved clip to engage a hat brim, a lower forwardly extending clip engaging the fan blade and holding it against the lower side of the clip body and the hat brim and a spring tongue within the lower clip engaging the adjacent edge of a fan blade.
2. The combination with an eye-shade or fan, of a double clamp comprising a fiat body provided at its outer end with an upwardly and rearwardly extending highly arched clip to receive a curled hat brim, a lower forwardly extending clip receiving the fan blade, and a spring tongue extending forwardly along the body within the lower clip engaging the adjacent edge of the fan blade.
3. The combination with an eye-shade or fan, having a notch in its top edge, of a clip body having means for securing it to a hat brim and a clip on the lower side of the body to receive a fan blade and hold it against the underside of the hat brim, and a spring tongue extending forwardly along the lower face of the clip body to hold the adjacent edge of the fan thereagainst and be straddled by said notch.
4.
