To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB TAUSS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Hat-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved hat fastener, more especially designed for use on ladies hats to fasten the same securely in position on the head. For the purpose mentioned use is made of one or more combs forming a permanent fixture on the hat, to readily engage the wearers hair on placing the hat in position on the head.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference inclicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ladies hat provided with the fastener; Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section of the same; and Fig. 8 is an inverted plan view.

The hat A, as shown in the drawings, is provided with an extension band B adapted to fit the head of the wearer, and on the inside of this band B, at the sides and at the back thereof, are secured, by rivets C or other fastening devices, attaching plates D, D, D of which the side plates D, D are connected at their lower edges by spring hinges E, E with the backs of side combs F, F, while the back plate D is connected by hinges E with a back comb F, the combs F, F and F being adapted to engage with their prongs the hair on the wearers head. The spring hinges E, E press the side combs F, F inward against the sides of the wearers head, thus aiding the combs to hold the hat in place by the pressure of the combs.

The back of each comb F, F, F is preferably provided with elongated apertures F 3 for the passage of rods or pins G, preferably passed through the apertures F in the rear comb F to then pass through the hair of the wearer, and finally pass through the apertures F in the side comb F or F, to aid the combs F, F, F in firmly holding the hat against accidental displacement by gusts of wind or other causes. The side combs F, F are normally held within the hat by their Specification of Letters Patent.

spring hinges E, E, while the hinge E for the back comb F is sufliciently stiff to hold the latter in any adjusted position.

In order to prevent the combs F from swinging too far outward, stops D are formed on the attaching plates D, D, D to extend onto the outer faces ofthe combs, as plainly indicated in the drawings. The combs F, F and F are preferably provided with small knobs or handles H, to allow the user to conveniently manipulate the combs to properly engage the same with the wearers hair, to hold the hat in place.

If it is desired not to use the combs F, F F for holding the hat in position, the combs are folded within the hat, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2.

The hat fastener shown and described is very simpleand can be readily attached to any style of ladies hat.

Although I prefer to use three combs F, F, F located on the hat, as shown and described, it is evident that the number of the combs and their location on the hat may be varied without deviating from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure'by Letters Patent:

1. A hat fastener, comprising a band adapted to be secured to a hat, plates secured to the band at the sides and rear and projecting below the lower edge of the band, and a comb hinged to the lower edge of each plate to swing inwardly toward the center of the band, said combs being provided in their backs .with apertures adapted to receive hat pins.

2. A hat fastener comprising a band adapted to be secured to a hat, and pivoted and spring pressed combs carried by the band, one at the rear and one at each side, the combs being adapted to swing inwardly and provided with apertures in their backs, said combs being adapted to receive hat pins through the apertures thereof. 5
