IDA MAGDALENA SOHWARZER, OF NEW ROCHELLE, NEW YORK.
WOMANS HAIR-RETAINING- COMB.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IDA M. SoHwARznR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Rochelle, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved WVomans Hair-Retaining Comb, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved womans hair retaining comb, for securely holding the hair in the proper position on the wearers head without the use of hair pins and like devices.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a face view of the improvement showing the members in an open position; Fig. 2 is a like view of the same, showing the members closed; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.
The hair retaining comb is preferably formed of celluloid or other suitable material, and it consists essentially of two members A and A, curved toward each other and pivotally connected with each other at one end by a pivot B, to allow of swinging the members A, A into an open position, as shown in Fig. 1, or into a closed position, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. The free ends of the members A and A are provided with lugs C, O which are adapted to interlock when the members A and A are in a closed position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so as to hold the members against accidental opening. The members A and A are provided along their inner edges with teeth D, D, and similar teeth E, E are formed along the outer edges of the said members, the teeth D and E and D and E lying in the same plane, and the teeth D and D are of such a Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 24, 1908.
Patented April 18, 1909.
Serial No. 149,928.
length that when the members A and A are closed they overlap at their terminals, as plainly indicated in Figs. 2 and 3.
In using the device, the members A and A when in an open position are placed on the back of the head, and the hair braid is passed between the said members, and then the members are closed with the hair locked between the overlapping teeth D, D. The braid is now wound around the device, to engage the outermost teeth E, E, so that the device is completely covered by the hair, and the ends thereof are tucked under the knot formed in the usual manner.
By the arrangement described, the device is held securely on the hair, and the hair is retained in firm position without danger of coming loose and without the use of hair pins or similar fastening devices.
The hair retaining comb shown and described is very simple in construction and can be cheaply manufactured and readily applied for the purpose mentioned.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A hair retaining comb comprising members hinged together at one end and having locking means at the other end for locking the members in a closed position, the mem bers being curved outwardly, and each member being provided with a plurality of parallel teeth along the outer edge and with a plurality of parallel teeth along the inner edge, the inner teeth of the said members overlapping each other at their terminals when the members are closed, the overla ped terminals appearing in a line extending rom the pivot of the said members to the locking means.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
IDA MAGDALENA SCHWARZER.
