Be it known that I, JOSEPH CoRoos, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Securing Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to means for se curing ladies hats on the head, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction, effective in operation and which is designed to be secured in the crown of a hat and to be ready for use at all times and which avoids the use of pins passed through the crown and having projecting point portions.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my invention are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of the crown part of a hat and showing my improvement and indicating the method of its operation; Fig. 2 a perspective View of my improved hat securing device detached; Fig. 3 a side view of one of the two parts of which the device is composed; Fig. 4 a similar view of the other of said parts, and Fig. 5 a view of a modified form of pin arm which I may employ.

In the drawing forming part of this specification I have shown, in Fig. 1, at a, the crown of a ladys hat, and in the practice of my invention, I provide a hat securing device Z2 which, in practice, is placed in the crown of the hat and which may be secured therein in any desired manner.

The hat securing device consists of two approximately similar parts 0 each of which is composed of strong spring wire bent to form Ushaped members 0 consisting of short side or arm members 0 and longer side or arm members 0*. The short side or arm members 0 of one of the parts 0 is provided at its end with an eye 0 through which the short side or arm member 0 of the other part c is passed, and the longer side or arm member of one of said parts is provided with two eyes 0 and 0 through which the longer side or arm of the other part is Specification of Letters Patent.

passed, and the longer sides or arms 0 of both of said parts are provided at their ends with eyes 0 and downwardly directed supplemental arms 0 provided at their lower ends with eyes 0 The device also involves curved pin arms (Z having at one end eyes (Z and the other ends of which are provided, in the form of construction shown, with Ushaped pins d and the shorter side or arm members 0 of the parts 0 are passed through the eyes 61 whereby the pin arms (Z are connected with said parts and movable on the cross head portions 0 thereof, and the other ends of the pin arms (Z are passed downwardly through the eyes 0 and c and are freely movable therethrough and the Ushaped pins (Z are passed through and secured in eyes (Z at said ends of the pin arms (Z after they have been passed through the eyes 0 and 0 The eyes 0 are also provided with outwardly directed handle members 0 which are adapted to be passed through the sides of the crown of the hat and are movable therethrough, and the outer ends of which are provided with detachable knobs or heads 6 The normal position of the parts of my improved hat securing device, when not in use, is that shown in full lines in Fig. 2 and indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and in practice, the device is passed into the crown of the hat and the handle members 6 are passed outwardly through the opposite sides thereof, and said device may be otherwise secured in the crown of the hat, if desired, in any preferred manner.

In Fig. 1, I have indicated in dotted lines at f the back of a ladys head and the hair thereof, and in placing the hat on the head the handle members 6 are drawn outwardly, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, after which the handle members c are forced inwardly, as shown in dotted lines in said figure, and this throws the pin members (Z into the position shown in dottedv lines, and said pin members pass through the hair in opposite directions and securely hold the hat on the head, and the points of the pin members (Z may be provided with small knobs (Z in order to prevent them from injuring the scalp if they come in contact therewith.

The use of the Ushaped pin members d is not absolutely essential and the pin arms (Z may simply be projected to form single pin members, if desired and in this event the eyes d at the ends of the pin arms would not be necessary, and one of the pin arms made in this manner is shown at d in Fig. 5, the pin arm here shown being provided at one end with the loop, ring or eye (Z the same as in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, and at the other end or at the point thereof with the knob (Z It will be observed, oi course, that the main part of the pin arms (Z which are passed through the eyes a and 0 are arc-shaped or segmental in form to permit of their proper operation, as hereinbefore described, and it will also be observed that the separate parts 0 oil the device are freely movable one upon another, but cannot be detached or disconnected in the operation of the device, but my invention is not limited to the exact construction of the separate parts 0 herein shown and described, this construction being preferable when the separate parts of the device are composed of wire or a wire rod, but these parts may be modified in the details of their form and construction, all that is necessary being that they be slidably con nected and that they be provided with end portions through which the curved pin arms may be passed, and changes in and modifications of the details herein shown and described, may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A hat securing device of the class de scribed composed of spring wire and comprising two U-shaped parts slidably connected, the corresponding sides of each of said parts being extended and provided with sliding curved pin arms which are passed therethrough, said pin arms being loosely connected with said parts at one end and being provided at their opposite ends with pin members, and said parts being also provided,where the pin arms pass therethrough, with handle members adapted to be forced outwardly through the sides of the crown of a hat and which areprovided with detachable heads.
