HAT-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,006, dated June 21, 1898.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, DAVID V. GARIS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hat-Fasteners, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of an improved construction of hat-fastener which is adapted to be readily applied to existing hats and bonnets and is normally invisible, the necessity for the employment of pins or other fastening devices to hold the hat in position being entirely obviated, provision being made for causing the fastening-pin to spring into the crown of the hat out of sight when the hat is removed from the head.

It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a hat-fastener embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the fastener removed from the hat, showingv the position the parts assume when the hat is on the head. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation showing the position the parts automatically assume when the hat is removed from the head. Fig. 4 represents a rear elevation of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 represents a rear elevation of Fig. 3.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a fastener, one portion of which consists of a bow whose limbs 13 are adapted to be attached to the crown of a hat, said limbs having eyes 0 in the rear thereof and the depending brace D, which joins said eyes. The'other portion E of the fastener consists of the pin F, which is formed with aloop or head H J and has its limbs held together near said head by means of the ring or strap G, it being seen that the eyes 0 freely receive the ends'of said head.

It will be noticed that the pin has its head mounted in the eyes of the bow as the fulcrum of the former, and when said pin is turned to a vertical or substantially vertical .position, limited by the brace D, a twist is imparted in Figs. 3 and 5.

The operation is as follows: The bow is secured within the brim or body of a hat in any suitable manner, and owing to the spring or pressure exerted against the pin F the latter occupies a horizontal position and is accordingly folded within said body, as will be seen When service of the fastener is required, the pin is turned downwardly in the position seen in Figs. 1, 2, and 4: and inserted in the back hair in the manner of an ordinary hair pin or comb, whereby, owing to the forward and upward pressure exerted on the pin, the hat and back hair are pressed toward each other, thus firmly holding the hat in position on the head. When the pin is withdrawn from the hair and the hat removed from the head, said pin immediately moves forwardly and upwardly and is automatically folded within the bow, and consequently the hat.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A hat-fastener consisting of a bow having limbs with eyes and provided with a brace continuous of said eyes, and a pin having a head which latter .is mounted on said eyes.

2. In a hat-fastener, the bow B having the eyes 0 and brace and stop D continuous thereof, and the pin F having,on its upper portion, the contracted neck with the confining-clasp G therefor and a head above said neck mounted on said eyes, said pin normally closing toward said bow.

3. A hat-fastener consisting of the limbs B, B, with the eyes-O, O, and depending brace D integral with said limbs and eyes, and the pin F having a looped head portion, and depending limbs E, E, 'said'head portion being journaled in the eyes 0, O and the clasp G on said limbs E, E.
