To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, rrricn'srus J. lWAnNnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at llarrisonville, in the county of Meigs, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in llatsllasteners; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to a hat fastener and more particularly to the class of devices for detachablv securing hats or head coverings upon heads of the wearers.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this cha 1acter in which a hat or head covering may be held upon the head of a wearer so as to avoid an v possibility of the hat becoming detached during windy weather or otherwise, the fastener' being concealed within the crown of the hat so as to not destroy the ornamentality or neat appearance of the latter while being worn.

"tnother object of the invention is the provision of a fastener in which the same may be mounted in `varying styled hats whereby it will not be visible from the eX- teiior ot the hat when worn and that will serve to conveniently hold the hat securely upon the head of a person while being worn without possibility of the same becoming blown oti' or accidentally falling from the head of a person.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this chari'icter, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and etlicieut in operation and inexpensive in manufacture.

lilith these and other objects inl view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, disclosing the preferred form of embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawings by numerals S designates generally a hat which may be of any desirable style or shape having a crown 9 terminating at its lower edge in a rim 10, the crown being closed by top 11. rlhis hat S is provided with a suitable lining 12 which covers the crown top and rim thereof.

lithin the crown of the hat is mounted the fastenii'lg device which comprises a cross bar 13 thc latter having laterally extending terminal ears lt provided with suitable openings to contact with the side wall of the crown and through these openings are passed threads or other suitable fasteners 15 which also engage the crown 9 of the hat for the secure mounting of the cross bar 13 ther-ein near the top 11 of the said crown. Supported upon the said cross bar 1? are curved pointed jaws 16 the saine being connected to the said bar 13 by pivots 17 whereby the pointed ends thereof may swing toward and away from each other, the inner ends of the said jaws 16 being connected by a pivot 18 whereby on moving one jaw the other jaw will simultaneously move therewith. One of the jaws 15 is provided with a slot 16a through which the pivot 18 projects, whereby the two jaws will not bind on the pivot 18.

Art, one side of the crown t) immediately below one end of the cross bar 13 is stitched or otherwise secured a guide plate 19 the latter being formed with a vertical guide eye Q0 through which is slidably mounted an operating rod or shank Q1, the upper end of which is swivelcd in one end of the rocking link 22 the latter being connected medially of its length by a pivot 23 to the cross bar 18, the inner end of the link 22 being connected to the adjacent jaw 16 by means of al pivot 9/1- so that on shifting the rod 21 in one direction it will actuate th-e link QQ and through the medium of the latter the jaws will be brought to a closed position or in other words moved in a direction to approach each other. rlhis rod or shank 21 when pulled in the opposite direction will cause the openingof the jaws 1G or in other words will effect the separation oi"I the jaws for permitting the hat to be readily detached from the head of a wearer.

The free end of the shank or rod 2l is formed with a hand hold or eye '25 which may be manually gripped for actuating` the said rod or shank for moving the jaws. 7 hen it is desired to secure the hat on the 'head of a wearer the rod is pushed upwardly within the crown which will cause the approach of the pointed ends of the jaws 16 toward each other thereby causing `the same. to. penetrate the hair and thus fasten the hat upon the head 'of a person.

- To unfasten the hat preparatory to remov-' member and connected with each other, a

rocking link pivoted to said n'iember inter mediate of its ends and pivoted to one of the jaws and an operating` rod pivoted to said rockingl link and slidably secured against the side of the crown and concealed in said crown.

The combination with a hat having a crown, oi a fastening device eoliiprising a member disposed within said crown and bridging the same, movable jaws pivoted to said member and connected to each other, a rocking link pivoted to said member and to one of the jaws whereby upon movement of the link the said jaws will be operated for causing the same to approach each other or to separate, a guide member secured interiorly oi the crown beneath the link, and an operating` rod slidable in said `guide member and loosely connected to the .free end of the link whereby it may be operated.
