Be it known that I, JOSEPH VALIND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gladstone, in the county of Delta and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grab Hat-Pins, of which t-he following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in fastening devices for womens hats, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is of a comparatively simple structure and which will dispense with the use of the projecting hat pins now commonly employed for securing womens hats.

As is well known the ordinary hat pin projects a distance beyond the crown of the hat and this projecting portion becomes a menace to the public especially when the wearer passes through crowded thoroughfares. A projecting pin is also dangerous when removed from the hat of the wearer, as for instance in theaters, waiting rooms and the like.

It is therefore the primary object of the invention to provide a device which may be secured to the crown of the hat and which is provided with oppositely arranged hooks, the latter upon the depression of a suitable bar connected with the said hooks forces the same toward each other so as to grasp the hair of the wearer without injuring her head.

.Vith the above, and other objects in view, which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same showing the hooks elevated to allow the removal of the hat from the head of the wearer. Fig. 3 is a. perspective view of the device.

In the drawings the numeral l designates an ordinary hat and 2 the hat fastening device. This hat fastening device may be applied to the crown of the hat in any desired or preferred manner such as stitching the same to the crown of the hat. The attach- Specicaton of Letters Eatent.

ing device 2 comprises a substantially rectangular frame 3, the same being preferably constructed of wire. The frame l is provided with a pair of oppositely disposed pivoted links 1t and 5, and the said links have their free extremities connected with a pair of gripping hooks 6 and 7. rIhese hooks G and 7, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings are normally retained within the frame 3 and the said hooks through the medium of the links 4f and 5 are connected with a push bar 8, the same having its upper eX- tremity provided with an interiorly threaded opening which is adapted for the reception of a headed threaded extension 9. The extension 9 is adapted to project above the crown of the hat and it will be readily noted that when the saidheaded member is pulled upwardly the grab hooks 6 and 7 will be positioned within the frame 3 and that when the said headed member 9 is pushed downwardly as illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings the grab hooks 6 and 7 will be swung toward each other so as to grasp the hair of the wearer and prevent the accidental removal of the hat therefrom.

.s rom the above description, taken inv connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that I have provided an eX- tremely simple and thoroughly effective device for the purpose intended, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the improvement, as it now appears to me, minor details of construction, within the scope of the following claim may be resorted to if desired.

Having thus fully described the invention, what claim as new is in a device for the purpose set forth, a substantially rectangular frame, gripping hooks pivotally connected with the frame, said hooks each having` their engaging ends disposed toward each other, links pivotally connected with each of the hook members, a push bar pivotally connected with the links, said push bar having its upper port-ion formed with a threaded bore, and a threaded headed extension engaging the bore, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
