Description
J.- LUCIUS.
HATPIN GUARD.
APPLICATION FILED MAY23, 1921.
1,397,531 Patented Nov. 22, 1921-.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH LUCIU'S, OF CHAMPION, MICHIGAN.
HATPIN- GUARD.
Application filed May 23,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Lucius, a citizen of the United States, residing at Champion, in the county of Marquette and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hatpin-Guards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompany- I ing drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in hat pins and has for its principal object to provide a safety device for preventing the projecting end of the hat pin from injuring anyone.
Another object is to provide novel means for holding the safety device, or guard, upon the end of the hat pin.
Still other objects and advantages of the peculiar construction will appear in the further description of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawing forming part of this application in which like reference characters indicate like parts:
Figure 1 is a broken view of a hat pin with my invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a cross section of that part of the device which is applied adjacent the head of the hat pin,
Fig. 3 is a cross section of the guard,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a ladys hat showing my invention applied thereto.
As is obvious this invention may be applied to any ordinary type of hat pin and consists of the member 1 which has an annular opening or bore 2 therethrough and is designed to slip onto the shank of the hat pin. This member 1 is preferably constructed of spring metal, it being slidably disposed upon the shank 8 of the hat pin to a point adjacent the head 9 thereof, and positioned outside of the hat, it having one or more longitudinally extending slits 3 in the cylindrical body portion 11 thereof which are normally pressed together, thereby forming a plurality of gripping sections for securely holding the member in any predetermined position on the shank of the hat pin.
The guard member 4 for the projecting end of the hat pin is of much the same con- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 22, 1921.
1921. Serial NO. 471,546.
struction as the member 1, except that there is provided thereon a hollow enlargement 5 to cover the pointed end of the pin to prevent same from passing therethrough. This member has a bore therein and 21 slit 1O longitudinally the cylindrical body portion 12 thereof forming a plurality of gripping members, so that the same may slip over the end of the hat pin and the impinging effect of the gripping members aid in holding it thereon.
I have shown eyelets 6-6 attached in any desired manner to the members 1 and 4 to which may be attached a fine helical spring or rubber cord such as illustrated at 7 in Fig. 1, this being for the purpose of insuring against the guard being disengaged or over the end of the pin; thus providing an efiicient means for guarding the projecting point of a hat pin which does not in the least interfere with its usefulness.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: i
1. The combination with a hat pin, of a member, slidable upon the shank of the hat pin to'a point adjacent the head thereof, a guard to cover the projecting end of the hat pin, and means cooperatively uniting the member and guard for holding the latter on the pin.
2. The combination with a hat pin, of a member slidably adjustable upon the shank of the pin to a point adjacent the head thereof, a removable guard mounted upon the point of the pin and resilient means cooperatively uniting the member and guard.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH LUCIUS.
