Description

J. DURSGHAK.
SAFETY APPLIANCE FOR HAT PINS.
Patented Mar. 25, 1913.
UNIEI) STATES PATENT OFFIC f JOSEF DURSCHAK, OF LAPEER, MICHIGAN.
SAFETY APPLIANCE FOR HAT-PINS.
Application filed August 30, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnr DURSCHAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lapeer, in the county of Lapeer and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Appliances for Hat-Pins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a safety appliance for hat pins and my object is to provide a removable sheath or receiver for the sharp end of the hat pin, the said removable memher being provided with locking means for engaging the point of the pin, whereby it will be held reliably in position thereon until manually removed.
A further object of my invention is to provide a thoroughly reliable and efficient covering or protecting means for the end of the point, usually made in resemblance of the head proper of the pin, whereby, when the hat pin is locked in operative position, both ends thereof will present the same appearance.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter made clearly apparent in the following specifications and in the accompanying drawings, of which,
Figure 1 shows my invention complete as applied to use on a ladys hat. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of my sheath or point covering device as manufactured ready for use. Fig. 3 is an end view partly in section of the pin and my sheath or covering device applied thereto.
For convenience of description numerals will be applied to the several parts, the same numeral applying to a corresponding part throughout the several views.
In materializing my invention I provide a pin 1 of the usual or any preferred construction having a head proper 2, permanently attached to the end thereof, the free end being sharpened in the usual manner and provided with an eye or slotted opening 3. The sharpened end of the pin is designed to fit within a suitable bore provided in the central portion of the removable sheath or imitation head 5,the wall of said bore being recessed to provide a seat for the locking member.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1913.
Serial No. 717,960.
The locking member is formed of a single piece of resilient material, substantially triangular in shape, the side 10 of which is engaged against the wall of the recess 6 and anchored in position by the pin 11 secured through the sheath 5. The adjacent side of the triangular locking member is formed with the loop or bulged portion 8 adapted for engagement within the eye 3. The remaining side of the locking member is bent at 7 so as to provide a handle by means of which the operator may readily lift the loop 8 out of engagement with the eye 3.
From the foregoing, it is obvious that the tension of the spring locking member will be directed toward the pin, thereby causing the loop member 8 to enter the eye or opening 3 formed in the pin near the point thereof and thus prevent the casual withdrawal of the latter.
In operation it therefore follows that when it is desired to remove the sheath or imitation head, all that is necessary to be done is to direct an outward pull upon the handle 7 which will lift the loop or anchoring member 8 out of the eye or socket 3, thereby permitting the point of the pin to be easily Withdrawn from its seat within the central portion of the head 5. It also follows that the point of the pin may be very readily entered within this seat within the imitation head or sheath member 5, inasmuch as the point of the pin will operate to elevate the loop member 8 and force the same out of its path when by action of the springs force the said loop member will enter the eyelet or opening 3 and reliably hold the parts together until manually removed in the manner above set forth.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a reliably efficient means for covering the point of a ladys hat pin and thereby insuring complete protection against acci dents which so often happen when the point of the pin is left exposed.
It will be understood that the sheath member may be made of any preferred style and size deemed best suitable for the purpose, and while I have described the preferred construction and combination of parts, I wish to comprehend such substantial equivalents and substitutes as fall fairly within the scope of my invention.
Believing that the advantages, construction and manner of using my invention have been set forth, further description is deemed unnecessary.
What I claim as new is:
The herein described protecting means for hat pins comprising a body portion of any desired form having a centrally disposed bore and a recess in the Wall of said bore, a spring locking member operatively mounted Within said recess and comprising a single piece of material substantially triangular in shape, one side of said locking member being engaged against the Wall of said recess, a pin extending through said body portion for anchoring said locking member in position, said locking member being also provided upon another of its ber for retaining said body portion upon said pin.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
