To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CARRIE PILCHER BnoUssARD, citizen of the United States, residing at Youngsville, in the parish of Lafayette and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification. Y
rlhis invention relates to hat pin point protectors; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character wherein the protecting element will be positively held against accidental loss from the point while in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the protecting element for the point may be conveniently applied to or removed from the point as the occasion may demand and which will serve to completely house the point and positively prevent the same from being brought into contact with objects in its proximity.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a locking device which will automatically engage with the pin during the operation of inserting the point in the housing or protecting element.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings z-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hat pin, showing the application of the protecting device thereto; F ig. 2 is a perspective view of the closing head or back plate of the protecting sleeve; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the housing element, showing the application of the head or closing plate thereto; Fig. l is a perspective view of the locking element removed from the plate; Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section through a portion of the pin, showing the protecting device in an applied position thereon.
The pin 1 herein illustrated is provided at one end with a suitable ornamental head 2 and at the other end with a point 3, the shank of the pin having an annular depression 4 therein immediately at the inner end of the point 3.
The protecting device 5 preferably comprises a housing crown 6 which if desired may be made to harmonize with the oppo- Specicaton of Letters Patent.

site head 2 of the pin or which may be provided with anv desired ornamentation which will lend to the attractiveness of the article. The crown 6 is preferably provided with an inner attaching flange 7 which is crimped around the peripheral edge of a back plate or disk 8, the latter having an -opening 9 therein for the reception of the point of the pin. The disk 8 is provided with parallel grooves 10 in which are extended the side edges of a locking element 11. The inner 'end of the locking element is provided with a bifurcated portion 12 whose arms are preferably beveled at 13 into the adja cent side surfaces 14: of the element so that the edge 15 of the bifurcated portion is relatively sharp and thereby made to effectually engage in the annular recess lin the shank of the pin.
The locking device 11 is provided with an integral stud 15 which is adapted to travel in a longitudinal slot 17 in the disk S. Said stud carries lat-eral portions 18 which extend beyond the sides of the slot and which are adapted for sliding engagement with the inner surface of the disk 8. The ends of the lateral portions 1S are connected to the outer terminals of retractile springs 19, the upper ends of the springs being connected with the devices 20 of the disk 8 whereby under the action of the springs the bifurcated portions 12 of the locking device will be properly presented across the opening 9 in the disk 8.
From this construction it is seen that the surfaces 13 will be presented to the point 3 so as to be actuated thereby and permit the locking device to yield under the action of the springs 19 during the operation of connecting the protecting device with the point of the pin. When the notch l of the pin is alined with the bifurcated end of the locking device it is evident that under the action of the springs 19 the device will be drawn in one direction and positively engaged in the notch 4c. 1n this manner the operation of locking the pin 1 with the protecting device is automatic. The outer end of the locking device 11 is provided with a ma nipulating portion 21, which may be of any desired configuration whereby it may be readily grasped to permit the device to be moved to an inoperative or released position. The manipulating portion 21 of the locking device 17 is adapted to engage against the peripheral edge of the disk 8 whereby to limit the projection of the bifurcated end l2 across the point receiving opening 9.
From the `foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation ot the invention Will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A hat pin point protector, a housing, a disk closing one end thereof and provided With a central opening, guides carried by the disk, a locking element slidable over the disk and Working in the guides, said element being provided with a bifurcated locking end extending over the opening'in the disk, the guides being spaced along their inner edges to provide an interveningV Athrough the slo-t between the guides and carried by said locking element and provided with lateral branches extending beyond the guides, and springs carried by the disk and located at the opposite sides Vof-said guides and connected with saidlateral portions ot the stud and operating to normally hold said locking element under tension, said housing forming a stop to engage the inanipulating portion of said locking element so as to limit the" movements of the locking element inthe direction-voi:l the aperture in said disk. i In testimony Whereoffl ailix my signature in presence of tivo Witnesses.
