HAT-PIN.

T 0 all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, DOUGLAS PERKINS, Jr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Plano, in the county of Tulare and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Hat-Pin, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention. relates to hat pins, and it has for its object to provide one with two telescopic tubular members, with means for holding the tubular members yieldingly extended, so that a pin of a breast pin may be inserted in the tubular members, which may be pressed together to permit the breast pin to be secured to the tubular members as an ornament therefor. A pin is secured to one of the tubular members, and is of the length required to permit it to be used by women as a means for securing the hat in place.

Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following complete specification, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.

By referring to the drawings it will be seen that tubular members 5 and 6 are provided, the tubular member 5 having an end disposed within the tubular member 6, so'

that it may telescope therewith. In the tubular member 6 there are slots 7, in which the pins 8, which are secured to the tubular member 5, are disposed, these pins 8 being provided to prevent the rotation of the tubular member 5 relatively to the tubular member 6. At the outer end of the tubular member 6 there is an inwardly extending shoulder 9, against which presses the end 10 of the spring 11, resting against the inner end of the tubular member 5, so that the spring 11 will hold the tubular members 5 and 6 yieldingly extended, the pins 8 limiting the outward movement of the tubular member 5 relatively to the tubular member 6. The outer end 13 of the tubular member 5 has a cut-away portion 14, which permits the in sertion of a finger in said outer end to fasten or release the pin 16 with the fastener 18 as hereinafter described. The pin 15 is secured to a breast pin 16 and has a pointed end 17 which is adapted to be engaged by the fastener 18. In operation, the pin 15 is Specification of Letters Patent.

passed through the members 5 and 6 and while telescoped, the operator engages the pin point 17 with the fastener 18, the cut away portion 1a admitting the fingers to readily manipulate the pin point 17 and fastener 18. After the pin point 17 is engaged with the fastener 18, the members 5 and 6 are allowed to extend and abut the fastener 18 and the hinge 19 for the pin 15 to hold the breast pin 16 securely thereto. To the tubular member 6 there is secured a pin 19, which is of a sufficient length to permit it to be used to secure a womans hat in place.

It will be understood that the body of the breast pin 16 serves as the ornamentation of my improved hat pin, and that this breast pin 16 may be removed, and another breast pin 16 may be substituted as may be desired. It will also be understood that pins of various shapes and constructed similar to breast pins may be used in connection with my hat pin. In securing a breast pin or other similar pin to the hat pin, the tubular members 5 and 6 are pressed together, and the pin of said breast pin is disposed within the tubular members, when its point 17 is secured to the fastener 18 on the breast pin in the manner readily understood.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In an article of the class described, a plurality of tubular telescopic members with open ends, means for holding the tubular members yieldingly extended, and a breast pin normally extending longitudinally of and through the tubular members and detachably secured thereto and an attaching means for the article secured to one of the telescopic members.

2. In an article of the class described, a plurality of tubular telescopic members, with open ends, resilient means for holding the tubular members yieldingly extended, and a breast pin normally extending longitudinally of and through the tubular members and provided with members for engaging the tubular members for holding them against the tension of said resilient means, and an attaching means for the article secured to one of the tubular members.

3. In an article of the class described, a tubular member with open ends and having a slot, a second tubular member with open ends and having a pin disposed in the slot, means for holding the tubular members yieldingly extended, and a stick pin secured to the side of one of the tubular members and extending therefrom at an angle to the tubular members.

4:. In an article of the class described, a tubular member with open ends and having a slot, at second tubular member with open ends and telescoping with the first tubular member and having a pin disposed for moving in the slot, the outer end of one of the tubular members having a cut-away portion to permit the insertion of a finger in the said outer end, means for holding the tubular members yieldingly extended, and a pin secured to one of the tubular members.
