J. CAMERON. HOLDER OR GUARD FOR POCKET BOOKS.
(Application filed Oct. 2, v1899.)

STATES y JOHN CAMERON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HOLDER OR GUARD FOR POCKET-BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 652,245, dated June 26, 1900. Application filed October 2, 1899. Serial No. 732,371. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOHN CAMERON, a citi- 'zen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders or Guards for Pocket- Books and other Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lo a device to be used for holding in the pocket bill-books, pocket-books, cards, letters, and other articles in sucha manner as to prevent their loss or accidental removal; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construci5 tion, novel arrangement, and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specically claimed.
The object of my inventionis to provide a guard or holder for pocket-books and other 2o articles which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, attractive in appearance, easily operated, and will engage the cloth of the pocket when desired, so as to prevent the article to which the holder or guard is at- 2 5 tached being lost or accidentally removed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it,referring to the accompanying drawings, in
3o which- Figure l is a perspective view of a book or bill-book, showing my guard or holder attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the guard or holder. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view thereof,
showing it attached to a bill-book and illustrating by dotted lines the position of the bars when arranged so as not to engage the cloth of the book. Fig. 4 is a plan view taken 4o on line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the guard or holder, illustrating a modification therein; and Fig. 6'is a side view of said modification, showing it employed for holding cards or letters.
Similar letters refer to like parts throughout the dierent views of the drawings.
A represents a hollow piece, which is preferably tubularin form, as shown in the drawings, and is provided at a suitable point with 5o an opening a for the reception and operation of the pin b, which engages the cloth of the pocket. The lower portion of the piece Ais formed or provided with an upturned foot a to receive a portion ofl the pocket-book A or other article to be retained by the holder. The upper portion of the piece A is provided with a cap C, having an openingc for the reception and operation of the rod or bar B which extends into the piece A and is preferably formed at its upper end with a knob b', against which the thumb or finger may be placed when operating the rod. The lower portion of the rod B is provided with a pin b, preferably formed integral therewith by ceiling the lower portion of the rod, as shown at b2, to form a spring and then bending the free end outwardly, so that it will diverge from the rod and pass through the opening a in the piece A, .as is clearly shown in Figs. l, 2, and 8 of the drawings. 4
Located within the piece A, between the lower end of the rod B and the lower end of said piece, is a spiral spring D, which serves to normally hold the pinY b on the rod in a projected position. The cap C is preferably formed with two prongs c to be employed for piercing the cover of thepocket-book or billbook and then bent down, as shown by continuous lines in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, so as to hold the piece A in position. The upper portion of the rod B is reduced, as at b3, to fit in the reduced portion c2 of the opening c in the cap C when it is desired to hold the pin Z) in a retracted position.
In Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings I have shown a modification in the construction of the holder which is more especially designed to be used in connection with cards or letters E, in which modification the same construction is employed as that above described, except that a spring e is secured at one of its ends to the upper portion of the piece A, and a cap C"without prongs is used instead of the cap C in the other construction. When using this inodiiication, a rubber band or cord e is placed around the cards or letters E and then hooked over the free end of the spring e, as shown in Fig. G of the drawings, thus securing the cards or letters at their upper parts to the holder, the lower ends thereof resting on the foot a', as is clearly shown.
The operation of my holder is simple and as follows: A portion of the cover of the pocket or bill book is placed between the foot IOO a and the lower end of the piece A, when the prongs c of the cap C may be pressed through the upper portion of the book and clenched, thus securely attaching the holder or guard to the book. When the rod is in the position shown by continuous lines in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, it is evident that the pin b will project through the opening a of the tube or piece A and will engage the cloth of the pocket, thus preventing the book working therefrom. By pressing the Yrod B down until the pin b is retracted and until the reduced portion b3 of the rod passes into the slot or reduced portion c2 of the opening in the cap C it is evident that the-pin will be held in its retracted position and so as not to engage the cloth of the pocket by reason of the enlarged portion of the rod B engaging with the said slot and preventing its upward movement. When so arranged, the pocketbook or other article may be easily removed jm the pocket.
I'Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I lclaim as new, and desire to secure bye Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a hollow piece hav' ing at its lower end means to engage a book or other article and provided between its ends with an opening, of a cap located on its upper end and having an opening provided with a reduced portion, a spring-actuated rod located in the said piece and provided at its lower end with a pin to project through the opening in the said piece, and near its upper end With a reduced portion to fit in the reduced part ofthe slot or opening in the cap, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN CAMERON.
