SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,573, dated September 25, 1894.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES HOFFMAN, of New York city, in the county and. State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Under-Coat-Sleeve Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to a sleeve holder especially adapted for holding the sleeve of an under coat close to the cuff or wrist of the wearer while an over-coat is being put on, thereby preventing the under coat from slipping upward under tension of the sleeve of the overcoat.

A further object of the invention is to provide a'device of the above character capable of being expeditiously and conveniently applied and removed, the device being exceedingly simple, durable and economic in its construction and capable of being folded up to occupy but a small space in the pocket.

The invention consistsin the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.

In carrying out the invention a plate A is employed as the body of the device. This plate is curved more or less in direction of its length in order that it may conform readily to the exterior of a sleeve. The plate may be of any desired length, but is preferably made quite short, substantially the length shown in the drawings, and one end of the plate is bent upward over its back or outer face to forma hook 10, preferably provided with a central tongue 11.

In connection with the body plate A an elastic is employed, and the said elastic B, is secured upon the under face of the body plate in any suitable or approved manner, usually through the medium of a metallic lace or laces 12 passed around the elastic and through apertures 13 made in the plate. made in one end of the plate, whereby a lengthy loop 15 is produced, while the opposite end of the elastic is made likewise in the form of a loop 16, but the said loop is short and extends but a slight distance beyond the hook end of the plate. The elastic employed is preferably in one piece returned upon itself to form the two

15 and 16 and two strands where the elastic is attached to the plate. It will be understood, however, that the elastic may be secured to the under face of the plate in any approved manner, as for 1 example, in such a way that the attachment will not be visible at the outer face of the plate.

In operation, before the overcoat is, placed upon the person the short loop 16 is passed over one of the buttons usually worn upon the sleeve of an under coat. The longer loop 15 is then passed around the sleeve of the under coat, the said loop being of such length that the elastic must be placed under tension to cause the loop to meet the opposite end of the plate. The longer loop when drawn to meet the body plate is then made to engage with the book 10 thereof, either with the body of the hook, as shown in Figi 1, or with its tongue 11, as may be found most convenient. The device will, when so fastened and as illustrated in Fig. 1, have placed the under coat sleeve under such tension and clamped it so to an engagement with the cuff, or with the wrist, if a cuff is not worn, that the sleeve of the under coat may be passed through the sleeve of the overcoat without the under sleeve being in the least danger of moving from the position in which it had been secured. When the overcoat is on the person the device may be readily removed by casting off the loop 15 from engagement with the hook of the plate A, and removing the short loop from the button of the under sleeve.

Having thus .described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A holder for the sleeves of under coats or like garments, the same consisting of a body plate provided'with a hook at one end, and an elastic loop projecting from opposite ends of the body,the loops being securely attached to the body, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A holder for the sleeves of under coats or other garments, consisting of a curved bod-y plate having one of its ends upwardly bent to form a hook, and an elastic loop extendlng from and beyond each end of the body plate, one loop being considerably longer than the other, as and for the purpose specified.
