SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '764,951, dated July 12, 1904.

Be it known that I, ADOLPH LANDAU, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved J ewelry-Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact .description.

My invention relates to protectors for jewelry and the like, being more particularly applicable to watches.

It has for its principal objects the so securing of such articles to the clothing of the wearer that while they may be readily detached by him they cannot become accidentally displaced nor be easily snatched by thieves.

It consists in the various features hereinafter described and more particularly claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 shows one embodiment of my invention applied to the retaining of a watch within a pocket. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section therethrough on the line'2 2 of Fig. 1.

protector separated from the watch and garment, and Fig. 4 is a similar view showing its loops opened for attachment.

As here illustrated, my improved protector is formed by the bending of a single integral strip of flexible material, preferably some such springy metal as hard-rolled gold, silver, or brass, the latter, if it be employed, being plated or finished in any desired manner. It consists of a central or intermediate member 10, at each extremity of which are curved end portions 11 11. Each portion 11 is then bent back toward the opposite end ofthe protector in side members 12 12, which may be substantially parallel to one another and oppositely inclined with respect to the member 10. This furnishes adjacent loops 13 13. Each side member is then turned to overlap the end portion to form engaging projections or hooks 14 15, the latter of which is preferably serrated at 16. The length of the hooks and the elasticity of the metal is such that they may be separated from their engagement with the curved ends, as is particularly shown in Fig. 4.

The article to be securedfor example, a watch W.may be now introduced under the end of the hook 14. and carried down into the associated loop and then this loop closed by the springing of the hook over the end portion. The protector is now inverted and the watch inserted in the pocket, the opposite hook 15 being brought down over the outer edge at P, when its teeth will firmly engage the fabric and retain it securely in place. When itis desired to remove the Watch from the pocket, it is only necessary to grasp the outer member 12 and draw it away from the side of the pocket sufficiently to disengage the hook, when the protector and watch may be readily raised together.

It will be seen that my invention will not only prevent the watch from accidentally dropping from the pocket, as when the wearer stoops, but will also furnish considerable resistance to efl'orts of pickpockets to snatch it. At the same time the device is exceedingly inexpensive and simple to make.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A jewelry-protector comprising a strip of flexible material bent to form adjacent loops, and with the ends of the strip overlapping the ends of the loops.

2. A jewelry-protector comprising a strip of flexible material bent to form opposite outer members, an intermediate connecting member joined to the outer members by curved end portions, and a hook upon each side member overlapping the end portions and capable of being sprung into or out of contact therewith.
