UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- ANDREW CLARENCE WEEKS,
OF ALHAMBRA, CALIFORNIA.
DEVICE FOR OPENING KNIVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,998, dated October 6, 1896.
Application filed May 2, 1896. Serial No. 589,969. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW CLARENCE WEEKS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Alhambra, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Opening Knives, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to devices for opening knives; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is adapted to be carried in the pocket or worn on a watch-chain; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure l is a side view of my improved de- Vice for opening knives and Fig. 2 a central longitudinal section thereof.
In the practice of my invention I provide a knife-opener which consists of a plate A, which is preferably larger at one end than at the other and in the larger end of which is formed a circular opening a, and the smaller end thereof is provided with two longitudinal slots cf, by means of which two side arms or projections a are formed, and a central spring-tongue ad. The central spring-tongue (0 is curved outwardly at the base thereof, as shown at a and then parallel with the side arms a and the end thereof is bent inwardly toward said arms, so as to form a hook a".
The plate A may be composed of any desired material, but is preferably composed of spring metal, and inoperation the ends of the arms a are inserted at one side of the blade of the knife, and said arms are pressed inwardly and outwardly, and in this operation the spring-tongue a or the hook a at the endihereof passes over the blade or on the side thereof opposite the arms a and the hook a enters the longitudinal slot in the outer side of the blade adjacent to the back thereof, and the blade may be pulled open by pulling on the end of the plate A, as will be readily understood.
This device is simple in construction and operation and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and my invention is not limited to the exact form thereof herein described, as it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages; and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
As a new article of manufacture a device for opening knives consisting of a body portion of plate spring metal in one end of which is formed an opening, and in the other two spring-tongue which is normally sprung outwardly and the outer end formed into an inwardly-directed hook, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 21st day of April, A. D. 1896.
ANDREW CLARENCE WEEKS.
