HUGO B. FEHRM, OF DORCHESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
SAFETY STICK-PIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1911.
Application filed September 19, 1910. Serial No. 582,805.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO B. FEHRM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dorchester, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Stick-Pins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety stick pins, and has for an object to provide a device of the class described which, by the peculiar formation and arrangement of its several parts, will be securely held against any undesired displacement from the garment in which it is to be worn.
Another object of this invention is the production of a safety stick pin which will be simple in formation, comprising but comparatively few parts, which can be manufactured and sold at a minimum cost.
lVith the purpose in view of effecting these several desiderata, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a side elevation illustrating my invention applied.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates the shank of a pin, having secured to its upper end, by suitable means, a head 2 of any preferred design. The upper end of the shank 1 of the pin is bent downward as at 3, and slightly to one side, to form an entering point 4, while the lower end terminates upward at a sharp angle 5, in an entering point 6, which extends in substantially parallel relation to the shank 1.
hen the pin is to be applied to a garment the entering point 4, which is slightly greater in length than the point 6, is inserted through the fabric thereof at any desired place, until the edge of the aperture made by such insertion engages the bend 3 in the shank. A distance is then gaged below this of the said fabric, the shank l is extended 7 beyond the bend 5, as indicated by the numeral 7, to afford a means for engagement with the thumb nail or finger of the person desiring to place the pin within a garment. It will be observed that should the lower entering point 6 become disengaged from the garment, the point 4, being bent slightly to one side, as hereinbefore mentioned, will obviously prevent the total dislodgment of the pin.
From the foregoing it will be manifest that a safety stick pin is provided which will answer all of the necessary requirements of such an article.
Having thus fully described this invention, what I claim as new is:
The combination with an ornamental head, of a shank secured thereto, inwardly extending entering points formed upon the opposite ends of the shank, one of said point-s being bent to form, with the shank, a fabric engaging clamp, and the other being bent to one side and at an angle to the shank for the purpose of preventing the total dislodgment of the pin from the garment to which it is applied, and a portion of the said shank extending beyond the lower entering point, whereby upon pressing thereon the lower entering point can be inserted into the fabric without permanently creasing or wrinkling the garment.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HUGO B. FEHRM.
