To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that l, Fnnonmcn W. YVER- Nnn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city and county of Deliver and State oi Colorado, have invented a new and useful Collar-Button, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in collar buttons, and the objects of my invention are:

First, to provide a collar button that is eX- pressly adapted for buttoning the front ends of the collar to the. front of the neck band of the shirt.

Second, to provide a collar button that is provided with any suitable kind of commonly used inner shirt band engaging base aud shank portion, but that is provided with an easily grasped anchor bar or head for securing the front ends of the collar and the back of the collar to the neck band of the shirt, the said button being especially adapted for use in connection with turn down collars of a style in present use, inwhich the proximity of the opposing edges of the fold of the. collar, renders the: buttoning of the collar extremely difiicult, in connection with the ordinary style of collar button.

I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 2, is a view thereof partly in side elevation and partly in section.

Fig. 3, shows the button in the collar band of an open front shirt, and in position to receive the iirst or inner button flap of the collar. V

Fig. 4, is a front view showing the long end of the head of the button inserted through the button hole of the inner end or flap of the collar, which is the first step in the buttoning of the collar.

Fig. 5, illustrates the second step in the process in which the head is turned and its long end pressed to bring the short end thereof through the button hole.

Fig. 6, illustrates both flaps of the collar buttoned, and the head turned to prevent accidental unbuttoning. And

Fig. 7, is a vertical, sectional view taken centrally through the collar and shirt band, as shown in Fig. 6'.

The figure l illustrates a collar button cinbodying my invention. In this ligure, as well as vin the remaining figures of the draw ings, the numeral 1 designates the shank of the button and 2 designates its inner holding base, which preferably is a round diskshaped button, but which may be of any other shape, suoli as a cross bar, that will keep the shank from working accidentally out of theV button holes 3 in the shirt band of' the shirt. rlhe shank and inner base member may be of any desired construction.

The essentially new and novel element of my collar button resides in its head 6, which comprises a cross bar formed either integrally with or secured to the opposite end of the shank from its base and 'forms the front display end of the collar button, and which secures the free endg of the collar to the shirt. i

This head portion of my collar` button is in the form of a fiat bar, but it may be any kind or form of eross'section of a cross bar, and its front surface may be ornamented by any kind or character of embellishments. This cross bar head, however, is of a peculiar and novel construction and it is constructed and arranged as follows:

The middle portion of the cross bar is arranged at right angles to the shank of the button and the cross bar is made in two unw equal lengths 7 and 8; the long portion of the cross bar is the linger grasping portion of the cross ,bar and it is the first to be inserted in the button holes of the collar after, of course, the head and the shank have been placed through the button holes of the shirt band. And in order that it may readily be grasped with the fingers and be quickly inserted in the button holes of the shirt and collar, its long end 8 is bent outwardly and in an outward curved form far enough to enable it to be easily manipulated and pressed by the fingers of the operator. The extremity of the long end 8 is also preferably flattened and made wider than its remaining portion, and is given an oval form, as shown, in order to facilitate its insertion in a button hole.

The short end 7 of the cross bar extends preferably at right angles to the shank of the button, and it is preferably of about onehalf of the length of the curved member 8 of the button, and its outside surface is preferably tapered down from the shank to its outer end, the inside surface of which is flat 'butt-on is inserted in the button hole of the innerend of the collar band of the shirt,

` and then turned Vto a horizontal position with the said long end neXt the vertical edge of the band; the said long end is then pressed upon, which causes the short end 7 to pass through the button hole. The head is then A turned to a vertical position with the long end down, and the said long end is passed through the button hole in the outer end of Vthe collar band and again turned to a horizontal position with the said long end next the vvertical edge of the said outer end of the collar band, and is then Vpushed inward,

` which brings the' short end of the head through the button hole after which the head is turned to the position shown 'in Fig. 3. The collar is then buttoned to the back of the collar band and its inner free end is polsitioned so that the button hole therein will pass over the long end of the head, and the Vhead is then turned to the position shown in Fig. 5, and the long end thereof pressed to cause its short end to pass through the button hole, after which the head is .again turned to the position shown in Fig. 3. Having described my invention, what I claim as ne and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

The combination in a collai' button, of a base, a shank round in cross section, and a head in the form of a fiat bar, one end portion of which is outwardly curved and gradnally reduced in thickness, and terminates in .a blunt button-holeinserting point, the said head tapering from its button-hole-inserting portion where it is widest, to its oppositie end where it is narrowest, the portions of the head on each side of the shank being of unequal length, the curved end portion being` made the longer, whereby when the curved end is inserted in a button-hole and the head turned to stand parallel with the said hole,

the shorter portion of the head is passed r through the hole by pressing on the said curved end.
