HELLEN Y. SCOTT, OF QUINCY, FLORIDA, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM OF APALACHICOLA, FLORIDA.
COLLAR.
' To all 'whom it' may concern.'
Beit known that I, HELLEN Y. Scorr, a citizen vof the United States, residing at Quincy, inthe county of Gadsden and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Collar, of which the following is a 'specication.`
The' object of the present invention is 'to provide, in an apparelvcollar, a novel arrangement and construction of buttonholes and incidentallyT the invention aims tov pro- 4 same to such degree as to render the collar useless.
A still further object of the invention is to so arrange vthe buttonholesat the front of the collar that when in registration and when receiving a button shank therethrough,
the front endsof the collar will be firmly 'held against relative displacement so that the upper edge of the collar will'be perfectly even'l in front\and. the appearance of the collarwill bfpnaterially bettered.
Inthe accompanying drawings, Fig-ure l "is a perspective View of a collar constructed in accordance with the present invention,
. and Fig. 2 is a similaivieiv but of the inner side of the collar atJ-the front thereof show- 4ing the relativelocation of the buttonholes at the front ends of the collar when thc col# lar is in use and receives the shank of a button throughA the said buttonholes.
lVhereas, in the. accompanyingdrawings, lthe principle of the invent-ion 1s illustrated as embodied in a turndown collar, it will be of course readily understood that theprinciple of the invention maybe embodied y in any other style or construction of collar so long as the collar is susceptible to such embodiment of the invention therein.
In the drawings, there is shown a collar of the turndown type indicated bythe numeralv 5 and having an inner front tab 6 land an outer front tab 7, it being understood that when the collar is applied to a shirt, the

heretoforey stated, to `provide y.against this yf upward displacement ofthe aforementioned a end of the collar with respect to; the last;y
mentioned end and they means for acc'om;r ,y phshing the result 1s embodledfin'aspecie form of buttonhole with: which-the 'collarfjfl is provided.

ycollar is to then be yadjusted withrespetf., to the shirt collar so asto bring the.'shankl of the button tovpositionat Lthelow'erfeindw of the slit portion 9 ofthe buttonhole, brin' other words at the drawings.
The tab 6 of the collar is formed buttonhole which is identical in shape with the buttonhole at the rear of the collar and which has its button head receiving portion indicated by the numeral l0 and its slit porvpoint 0, in Fig. l of the tion by the numeral lland the tab 7 is also lo() formed with a similar buttonhole. the button head receiving portion of which is indicated by the numeral l2 andthe slit portion by the numeral 18. As is clearly shown in Fig.
2 of the drawings, the buttonhole in the t: l; 105
6 is displaced vertically with-respect to the buttonhole in the tab 7 to such degree that when the tabs are brought together, as when the collar is attached to a shirt collar, vthe slit portion 13 of the buttonhole in the tab 110 with a g5 to; permit of'thefree passage ofthe-head.- of;

Fig. 2 of the drawings, by the numeral 14:, will be confined between the lower edgeof with respect to the shirt collarso as to bring the shank of the button tol position 'at the.
lower endl oj the slit .portion'Q'ofthe said After this has been done, the
button, the lhead 'of the ,Ilutton passing through the vbut-ton head .receiving portion 1,0 of` the buttonhole therein and finally the Atab 7 is graspedand is pulled toward the 'right and the button head is allowed to engage through the button head receiving portion 12 of the buttonhole therein, it being understood that the-button shank-'will slip .along in the slit portion 13 of the said buttonhole. in the tab jand will assume a position at the end of the said slit' portion 13 as clearly shown in Fig. 2 'of the drawings. "When the collar is thus. applied, the indicated in thesaid the button head receiving portion of the buttonhole intheI tab 6 an tab 6 with the shank of the button, the
' tab will be securely held against u ward displacement with respect to the tab, and consequently the lupper edge of the collar Vat j both ends thereof will be maintainedin the same plane and the appearance of the collar- I' v will not only bematerlally bettered but'the same will be rendered more comfortable to Wear.
It will be understood of' coursethat the I -Vprinciple of the inventionvmay be'embodied the slit portion'.v 13 of the buttonhole in the tab 7, and that by reason of the engagement of the lower edge.v
inner tab having of the portion 10 of the buttonhole 1n the' in 'a collar made of any material such as cloth, celluloid, or the like and that inasmuchas the button head receiving portions of the buttonholes are of such diameter as to permit readily the free vpassage of the head of, a button therethrough without engagingfthe edge of the said portion of the buttonhole, enlargement of the.buttonholes will be obvia-ted as will also injury to the edges thereof. Furthermore, it willbe understood; that ya collar constructed in accordance with the present invention may be 'more readily applied to a shirt collar than the construction of collar now on the market and in ,general use.
' That isv claimed is 1 A turnover collar formed with buttonholes in its front tabs, adapted to register, and having each a portion 'of'such diameter as to permit of the free'. passage of the head of a button and a slit extending fronrthe said portion, the slits for the two buttonholes extending in` the same direction, and
one of thelouttonh'oles being upwardly displaced lwith respect to the other, the button y head receiving portion 'of the inner one of the front tabs'lbeing located between the end of the tab and the `vertical edge of the corresponding-end of the turnover portionl of the collar and the-'button head receiving por. tion ofthe buttonhole .in the other or outer tab being located inwardly.- of the vertical edge .of the tu'rnover portion of' the collar at the other end, the button hole of the its slit portion extending ina direction away from'the end.- f the tab, and the button hole in the'outer ab having its slit portion extending in a direction to.- Wardthe end of the tab.`
- In testimony v my own, I havehereto aflixed my signature inthepresence of two witnesses.
