To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD M. CRANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hardwick, in the county of Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collar Attachments,

of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in attachments for collars and has particular reference to the attachments for turneddown or folded collars.

It is well-known that after a turned-down or folded collar is arranged on the neckband of a shirt the upper edges of the meeting ends of the collar tend to separate due to the fact that the strain on the collar tends to bring the tongues thereof in planes parallel with each other, with the result that the open space presented between the meeting ends of the collar detracts from the attractiveness of the same.

One object of the invention is to provide an attachment which will extend beyond the upper edge of one of the locking tongues and bind on the inner face of the folded portion of the collar, thus maintaining one of the tongues in a position oblique to the other, whereby the upper sides of the meeting ends will be thrown into engagement and what is known as a close fitting collar will be produced.

Another object is the provision of an attachment which may be readily attached to and detached from most forms of folded collars now in use and may 'be adjusted to various positions on the tongue according to the height of the collar.

A further object :is the provision of an attachment which when attached to the tongue of a collar will be completely hidden from View.

With these and other objects in view, which will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawinos, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of the device may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the specification Figure 1 is a front elevation of a turnrdown collar with a portion broken away and showing my device in operative position. i The inner side of the collar is designated by the numeral 5 and the outer side by the numeral 6 and the folded edge by the numoral 7. Extending beyond the ends of the inner side 5 are the usual locking tongues 8 having the usual button-holes 9. Since these parts are all of well-known construction a detail description of the same need not be given.

The device forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises a clip, the said clip including parallel side portions 10 and 11. The side portions are each preferably formed of a single piece of thin sheet steel or its equivalent oblong in contour and bowed at its intermediate portion. The sides 10 and 11 are secured together at one end by means of a bushing 12, corresponding in width to the width of the sides, but of considerably less length than the length of said sides. The bushing may be secured to the sides by brads or rivets or in any other desirable manner. By virtue of the intermediate bowed portions of the sides, the free ends thereof will bear one upon the other as shown in Fig. 3. By reference to Figs. 3 and 4 it will be seen that the sides 10 and 11 are provided with a plurality of spaced openings 13, the inner ends of said openings being slightly lip-struck, or in other words the edges of the said inner ends may be left ragged to prevent slipping of the device. In use the device is placed astride the outer tongue, or that which is usually the last to engage with the button. When the device is so positioned it is adjusted to extend diagonally of the flap with the connected end portions of the sides extending beyond the upper corner of the flap. The outer flap is now placed .over the inner flap in the usual manner, the attachment passing with the tongue between the outer and inner sides of the collar until the button is inserted through the button-hole of the outer llap. It will be seen when the parts are so positioned and the device properly adjusted. according to the height of the collar that the connected end portion thereof will bear on the fold of the collar, thus holding the tongue to which it is applied in a position. oblique to the opposite tongue, wherebythe upper portions of the meeting ends of the collar will hear one upon the other as shown in Fig. 1.

From the foregoing, itis evident that I have provided a device which is comparatively simple in structure and inexpensive in manufacture, embodying few parts and these so arranged that the danger of derangement will be reduced to a minimum.

I claim 1. In combination with a turned-down collar, of aclip to straddle one tongue of the collar and having one end port-ion ex tending beyond the upper edge of the tongue to bear on the inner face of the fold of the collar, for the purposes described.

2. In combination with a turned-down collar, of a resilient clip to straddle one tongue of the collar and having one end portion extending beyond the upper edge of the tongue to bear on the inner face of the fold of the collar, for the purposes described.

3. In combination with a turned-down collar, of a resilient clip including a pair of side portions to bear on the opposite faces of one tongue of the collar, said side portions being connected together at one end and extending beyond the upper edge of the tongue to bear on the inner faceof the fold of the collar, for the purposes described.

4. In combination with a turned-down collar, of a resilient clip to be detachably and adjustably secured to one tongue of the collar and having one end portion extending beyond the upper edge of the tongue to bear on the inner face of the fold of the collar, for the purposes described.
