SOFT FOLD-COLLAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July a, mic.
Application filed July 25,1914. Serial No. 853,148.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HUBBARD F. HURD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soft Fold-Collars, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to such improvements and consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of thls specification. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
Figure l of the drawings is a view of the inner side of a fold-collar embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the collar opened out flat, exposing to view the outer side of the band and the inner side of the top. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a modified form of the invention. Fig. 4L is a view similar to Fig. 2 of the modified construction shown in Fig. 3.
Some objections to the soft fold-collar are the difficulty of preserving the symmetrical relation of the ends of the folded-over top in use, and the unsightliness of such a collar when worn with the ends of the top disarranged. Various devices have been suggested to overcome these objections, which devices have either necessitated the use ofbuttons which become detached or broken in the laundry, or devices exposed to view in use, which are nearly as objectionable from the esthetic standpoint as are the disarranged ends of the top.
I have ascertained that by providing a soft fold-collar at each end with a loop of tape or cord attached at its opposite ends to the top of the collar in position to receive and embrace the neighboring end of the band of the collar, I am able to retain in use the ends of the folded-over top in symmetrical and proper relation to each other, without exposing to view in use the means whereby this result is accomplished.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1 is the band and 2 is the folded-over top of a soft fold-collar, the band having the usual short end, 3, and the usual interlocking long end, 4, and being provided with theusual buttonholes, 5. A piece of tape, 6, is secured and top of the collar on the outer side of the band, and by securing its other end at 8 to the rear side of the top, 2, by means of the usual line of stitching, 9, inserted along the end of the top at a distance from its endedge. When the top of a collar thus provided with the tape-loop, 6, is folded over upon the band, the loop, 6, will occupy a position between the band and the foldedover top, and the collar may be so worn, if it is not desired to employ the loop, 6, for the purpose of holding the ends of the top inproper position. In accomplishing the principal object of the invention, however, after the collar is so folded, the neighboring end of the band is inserted outwardly through the loop, 6, causing said end of the band to be embraced by the loop, and the neighboring end of the top to be thus held closely to the band.
In the construction just described, the upper end of the tape-loop extends outward from the groove formed by the folded-over end of the top, then over the upper edge of the neighboring end ofthe band, and down in thle inner side of the band as shown in In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4;, the upper end of the loop, 6, is inserted at 10 in the seam by which the top and band of the collar are connected together on the inner side of the band, and the lower end of the tape is inserted at 11, between the plies at the end of the top, in position to cause the loop, 6, to embrace the neighboring end of the band after the same has been inserted through the loop as shown in Fig. 3.
The construction last described avoids having the loop extend over the top of the upper edge of the band; but with this construction the ends of the band are neces sarily inserted through the tape-loops, as otherwise the loops would extend over the folded upper edge ofthe top of the collar and be exposed to view. 7
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A soft fold-collar having a band, and a folded-over top stitched to the band with the ends of the band projecting beyond the respective ends of the top, and having a loop attached at opposite ends to the top near its end, the length, of
Said loop between its points of attachment being substantially greater than theheight of the band whereby respective ends of the top, and having a loop inserted at one end-in the seam whereby the top and band are stitched together, and attached at its other end to the neighboring end-edge portion of the top, said loop being of a length greater than the height of the band whereby it is adapted to receive and embrace the neighboring projecting end of 15 the band.
In testimony'whereof, I have hereunto set Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cent: each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents;
