BURIAL-ROBE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES I. OWEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Burial-Robe, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to burial apparatus, and particularly to burial clothes or shrouds.

In preparing a body for the grave, it is often desirable to use a collar and necktie of a certain style. In the present practice of the art, there is usually provided a bosom which is attached to a waistcoat; and to a neck band which is formed at the upper portion of this bosom, the collar is permanently attached, carrying a necktie. This arrangement prevents the convenient interchange of different collars with the same bosom and waistcoat.

The object of this invention is to provide a construction which will enable collars of different styles to be used with the same grave clothes, and which will also enable the collar to be readily attached or detached to and from the clothes and around the neck of the body.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of part-s to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the grave clothes embodying my invention; Fi 2 is a vertical section taken through the grave clothes shown in Fig. 1, passing in a front and rear direction; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the back of the grave clothes and illustrating the manner in which the parts are secured at the back; this View is upon an enlarged scale; Fig. 4: is a rear elevation of a shirt bosom; and Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken through the collar and tie and representing the same as removed from the shirt or bosom.

Referring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents a coat, which is split or open at the back, as illustrated in Fig. 2. Under this coat there is provided a vest or waist- Specifioation of Letters Patent.

coat 2 which is also open at the back, and to this waistcoat 2 a shirt bosom 3 is attached permanently by stitches 4t passing along the edge of the bosom, and around the edge of the flaps 5 which are formed around the collar 6 of the bosom at the sides and rear, as indicated in Fig. 4:. On the flaps 5 strings or light ribbons 7 are attached on opposite sides at the points 8, as indicated in Fig. 3, and these ribbons are adapted to be tied so as to secure the bosom at the rear of the neck. The neckband 6 of the bosom is provided on its sides and near the rear with sockets 9 and a similar socket 10 is provided on the neckband 6 at the front.

I provide a removable collar 11, which may be of turned-over or rolled style, as indicated. This collar is split or open at the back, so as to form two side pieces as indicated in Fig. 3, and it is provided at this point with light cords or ribbons 12 which are attached to the collar at the points 13 shown. The collar is permanently closed at the front, and provided at this point with a snap button 14, and a permanently attached necktie 15 which may be of the style shown. At suitable points on the side of the collar, and on the inner face, snap buttons 16 are provided, which are similar to the buttons 14.

In applying the clothes to the body, the vest is placed in position, and the cords or ribbons 7 are tied, as indicated in Fig. 3. The collar 11 is then attached to the neckband 6 at the front by means of the button 14, which is received in the socket 10. The collar, which is open at the back as described, is then adjusted to the neck, and the buttons 16 are forced into the sockets 9 at the sides of the neckband 6. In this way the collar is held neatly in. position. The cords or ribbons 12 which are attached to the rear portions of the collar, are then tied together, as indicated in Fig. 3. In this view, the flaps 17 of the coat are folded back so as to expose the cords 7 and 12. After the collar is attached as indicated, the flaps 17 are folded over each other and pinned in position. Collars of different style with different style bows or neckties 15 will be provided so as to suit different requirements.

The distance between the buttons 14 and 16 of the removable collars will be the same in all cases, so that any of the collars may be quickly fitted into position as suggested.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A burial robe consisting of a waistcoat having a bosom permanently attached thereto, said bosom having a neck-band, a collar formed in two side pieces attached together at the front and attached to the front of said neck-band, fastening devices at intermediate points on the length of said side pieces attaching said side pieces to said neck-band, the rear ends of said side pieces lying adjacent to each other at the back, and cords attached to the rear ends of said side pieces and adapted to be tied together.
