SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,954, dated December '7, 1886 Application filed March 25, 1886. Serial No. 196,474.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, M. JENNIE MCCARTHY, of Camhridgeport, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Gossamers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention, relating to that class of garments known as gossamers. has for its object to provide the same with means by which increased strength may be obtained at or near the armholes.

I accomplish my object by means of a lin- I5 ing, as will be described, which is applied to the inside and secured to the front piece of the garment at or near the neck, the said lining extending only below the top of the armholes, and about midway or nearly midway thereof,

and being secured to the edges or sides of the armholes by a suitable binding.

In gossamer water-proofs, as now commonly made, the front pieces are provided with armholes 0, through which the arms of the wearer are inserted, only one front piece and one armhole being herein shown.

In putting on and removing the gossamer garments the wearer subjects the same to a considerable strain, principally at the top 0 of the armhole c, and the said garment is also subjected to a strain at that part marked 0 Fig. l, where the usual shield, d, is sewed to the outside of the garment to form a cover or lapel for the armhole. It has been found from experience that the garment is also frequently 4o torn at the part marked c when the wearer attempts to quickly rise from a sitting position, while the top of the armhole, marked 0,

is split by hastily putting on and removing the garment.

I propose, in accordance with my invention, to obviate the above-stated defects in gossamer garments by sewing to the front pieces, a, of the garment, which may be composed of any well-known water-proof fabric such as commonly used for this purpose, a lining, b, of any usual or suitable material, preferably a material which is of the same pattern or design as the design on the inside of the water- (No model.)

It will be understood that for the purposes of my invention it will be necessary that the lining extend no farther than at or about midway of the arlnholes from top to bottom.

One side of the lining b, as herein shown. is sewed to the button-flap e, and its opposite side is sewed to the front and back pieces, as at e". The other front piece having the other armhole has a similar lining secured in a simi-' lar manner.

In Fig. 2 I have shown the manner of securing the lining bto the fahrica at thearmholes, said lining. at the edges or sides of the armholes, being secured to the fabric by a binding, f, folding so as to inclose in its fold the lining and fabric, and being then sewed, as clearly shown in said figure, by stitches 2.

The lining Z), sewed to the front pieces, as descril ed, acts to receive the greater portion of the strain exerted upon the fabric at or near the ends of the armholes.

In Fig. 2 the material a, constituting the body of the gossamer waterproof, is shown as greatly exaggerated in thickness. In practice the said material is very thin.

I claim- A gossamer water-proof garment having a back piece and the front piece, a, which latter is provided with an armhole, the lining b, secured at one end to the front piece at or near the neck of the garment, and also at its sides to the front edge and to the back piece, re spectively, and extending below the top of the armhole, and about midway of the latter, and the folded bindingf, inclosing the lining and fabric in its .folds about the armhole, and sewed around said armhole, substantially as described.
