Be it blown that we, MAX PUeii'rsnY and ,SAMUEL Mannes, both citizens of the United States, and residents of the borough of 5. Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Linings, of which the following is a. specication.

Qur invention relates to linings, and more particularly to waistbands or linings for trousers.

In the manufacture of trousers, it is more or less common practice, at the present time, to sew the waistbands in place by hand.

This is relatively slow work, and is also more or less expensive, as it materially increases the cost of production, requiring, as

-it does, the employment of many hands. Oftentimes, this also necessitates putting 0 work outside of the factory, and when this is done the work is generally carried on 11nder unsanitary conditions, due of course to the class of labor employed in this kind of work.

5 The object of our invention is the provision of a waistband lining so constructed that it may be made and attached to the garment entirely by machine sewing, in order that the oost may be reduced, the output 0 per operator increased, and the work `carried on within the factory under direct supervision and sanitary conditions.

We are aware, in some instances, that heretofore waistband linings have been at- 5 tached to trousers by machine sewing. For

example, we are acquainted with the construction in'which a strip gf lining has been sewed along one edge to a canvas basev or lining strip, and at the other edge to the 0r edge of the trousers, the 'lining being provided with a plait or fold, beneath which the lining and the base have also been sewed to the trousers. In this construction, however, the main or body portion of the lining l5 is free to pull or work up above the top edge of the trousers, and in use, as a matter of fact, it actually does so in a very short time, and consequently another object of our invention is to overcome, this diiiiculty by so constructin the lining that the main portion thereo is fixed permanently within the trousers In carrying out our invention, we preferably employ a stiening strip or base, a face 5 lining secured along one edge thereof, a

.skirt lining member, and a main member, the said facing strip, skirt and main lining members being secured together and to the stiiening strip or base, the main lining member then turned over and secured at its free edge to the upper edge of the trousers, which are then turned inwardly,

the skirt member folded back, and the stiH- ening member, together with the face lining member, also -secured to the trousers by a line of sewing, which is covered by a skirt member after the same has been returned to its normal position, all of which will be hereinafter more particularly described.

.In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the upper portion of a pair of trousers fitted with our improved waistband lining.y Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation and cross section on line 2, 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing lthe manner in which, at the sides, the lining may be completed to provide for the distention of the skirt member thereof, and Fig. 4 is a section on line 4, 4, Fig. 3.

Referring to the drawing, it will be seen that in carrying out our invention, we prefer to employ. a stiiiening strip 10, which, as will be understood, may be made ofcanvas, buckram, or other similar material commonly employed fcnsimilarpurposes- T0- gether with this, we also employ a face lining member 11, which is folded over and extends appreciably over one edge of the stifening strip, a skirt lining member 12, and a main lining member 13. The skirt lining member 12 is preferably looped, that is, folded on itself, and placed against one side of the face lining member 11, then the main lining member 13 is placed against the outer portion of the skirt lining member, and these members, together with the stiffenng strip 10, are secured together by a line of sewing 14, or otherwise. The waistband lining is then complete and ready to be attached to the trousers. In doing so, the main lining member 13 is turned over the line of sewing 14, which then becomes invisible, and its free edge is secured to the upper edge of the material 15, of which the trousers are made, by a line of sewing indicated at 16. After this vline of sewing has been made, the lining is turned inwardly so that the then outer edge of the stiffening strip lies within the fold made in the trouser material 15.l The skirt member 12 is then turned`back, and the same, together with the stiening strip, are secured to the trouser material 15 by a line of sewing 16, all of which is clearly indicated in Fig. 2, and by reference thereto, it will be seen that the main lining 13 is fixed in position by the several lines of sewing and cannot possibly pull or Work up above the top edge of the trousers, and also that the line of sewing 17 is completely covered by the skirt member 12, so that the same cannot be seen.

By reference to Fig. 3, it will be seen that in carrying out our invention, the skirt member 12, in suitable pgositions, so as to come at the sides of `the trousers, may be provided With loops or iaps, indicated at 18 and 19, so as to provide for the distention of this part of the waistband in the use of the trousers which come over the hips. It will also be understood that the lines of sewing 14 and 17 may be terminated suiiciently far distant from the ends of the waistband as to enable the operator to properly turn in and sew these ends, as indicated at 20, 21, which are the rear ends, to the adjacent portions of the inturned seamed members of the trousers, similar connections being made, as will be understood, at the front of the trousers. Furthermore, it vwill be understood that the stifening member 10 may be carried suiiciently far, in the front portion of the trousers, to enable the operator to suitably attach thereto the members of a clasp 22 by placing the same at the edge of the trousers or at a suitable distance inwardly therefrom.

We claim as our invention:

In a pair of trousers, and in combina-f tion with the Waist portion thereof, a lining comprising a stitening strip, a face lining member covering one edge of the stiiening strip and secured thereto, a skirt lining member also secured to the sti'ening strip' and face lining member, at one side thereof, and a main lining member secured along one edge to the said stii'ening strips, face lining member and skirt lining member, and at its .other edge secured by a line o sewing to the edge of the trousers and then turned in- Wardly while vthe said stiening member, and face lining member are'secured to the trousers by another line of sewingwhich is covered by the said skirt lining member when the same is in its normal position.
