Be it known that l, Josnrn J. citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city'of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in .Waistbands for Trousers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to waistbands for trousers of the kind that are provided with belt-retaining loops or straps.

Usually, vertical loops comprising narrow straps are provided around the outside of the waistband at points above the hips on opposite sides of the side seams, and at or about the middle in the back, to'receive and support a detachable belt. It frequently happens that the waistband sags between the loops or straps, especially at the sides above the hips, and particularly in cases where the waistband is fitted loosely to the wearer.

The principal objects of my invention, therefore, are to prevent sagging and secure comfort to the wearer, and they are accomplished by providing elongated tubular or sleeve-like pockets in or on the waistband, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing which forms part of this specification and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur, Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of the upper portion of a pair of trousers whose waistband is constructed in accordance with my invention, and showing a detachable belt in place; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the waistband adjacent to the opening at the terminal of one of the belt-retaining tubes; Fig. 3 is a section taken on or about the line 33 of Fig. 2; and Fig. t is a frag mentary perspective view, partly in section taken on or about the line H of Fig. 3.

As shown in the drawing, the waistband 1 comprises a separate band or belt which is stitched to the body portion 2 of the trousers. Obviously, however, the waistband portion may be an integral part or continuation of the goods comprising the body portion, in accordance with the welllmown practice. The waistband is slitted, as at 3, on opposite sides of the side seam 4, and a Specification e Letters Patent.

strip of goods 5 is stitched at its opposite ends to the inner side of the waistband, as at 6, to provide a tube-like pocket or sleeve. The opposite ends of the intermediate portion 7 of the waistband are folded inwardly or hemmed, as at 8, and stitched by vrrtical where the slits 3 are to be provided. That is, the strips are stitched together, and then the end portions are folded back, as shown more clearly in Fig. 4:. The inner strips 5 are then sewed to the waistband and the latter is then otherwise finished with the exception of the slits 3. After the waistband is secured to the body portion of the trousers, the seam where the slits 3 are to occur, is ripped between the marginal portions of the waistband and the goods is buttonhole stitched or whipstitched, as at 12, at the ends of the slits, to prevent further ripping or fraying of the goods. in some cases, the elongated belt tubes or sleeves will be provided only at the sides above the hips, and an ordinary relatively narrow loop 13 may be provided at the ishin of the waistband, the same may be left stitched and opened at the option of the wearer.

The construction illustrated is nest in ap pearance and the belt tubes are practically invisible when the belt is removed as the inner strip 5 which is of substantially the same length as the outer goods of the waistband between the points where the ends of said strip are stitched thereto, prevents the slits 3 from gaping; and it will be noted that the waistband is held from sagging when the belt is applied, as it is supported on the belt throughout the length of the tube.
