(Cl. 2237) This invention is concerned with improvements connected with the waist bands of trousers and the like and more particularly improvements in the waist bands provided with a tunnel through which the waist belt extends. 1he invention is also concerned with improvements in self-supporting belts therefor. An object of the invention is to provide in this type of waistband an improved self-supporting belt which is not permanently secured to the trousers but can be removed and replaced by another belt. A further object is to provide improvements in waist bands and belts whereby the appearance and fit of the waist band is enhanced.

In the improved construction the waist band, in lieu of being formed with a tunnel extending across the back to which the waist belt is permanently attached, is formed at each side of the back and at each side of the front of the trousers with tunnels through which a waist belt may be guided while the waist belt is formed in portions and preferably in three portions consisting of a portion adapted to extend around the back to the sides of the trousers and two front portions adapted to be connected to fasten the waist belt say by a hook secured to one front portion engaging a bar secured to the other front portion. The portion extending over the rear to the sides of the Waist band is connected at each end to the front portions by tabs of the material attached to each of the portions by wide strips of elastic stitched into layers of the material of the belt, the tabs being provided with cooperat ing buttons and button holes by which the portions of the waist belt may be attached to one another with the elastic strips lying normally within separate tunnels. The rear portion of the belt is guided in the waist band by providing a loop stitched to the waist band and is adapted for connection thereto by a button and buttonhole connection, e.g. by a button hole on the inside of a loop and the button on the inside of the waist belt. The pairs of tabs connecting the portions of the belt together are interconnected by narrow strips of braid or the like on the side facing the waist band so that the tabs may hold in place when unbuttoned from one another or should a button come off.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which FIG. 1 is an elevation showing the inner face of the improved belt detached from the trousers and FIG. 2 a corresponding view of the exposed face of the belt. FIG. 3 is a perspective view showing the improvement in the waist band of the trousers with the belt in position. FIG. 4 is a rear view, FIG. 5 a front View and FIG. 6 a view of one side of the waist band with the waist belt in position.

As shown, the waist belt is formed in three portions viz: a rear portion 10 which extends around the rear of the waist band of the trousers but which is shown broken away in FIGS. 1 and 2 for convenience of illustration and two front portions 11 adapted to extend from the sides to the front of the waist band of the trousers and to be connected to fasten the waist belt as by a hook 12 secured to one portion 11 and a bar 13 secured to the other front portion. The rear portion 10 is connected at each end to the front portions 11 by tabs 14 of the material of the belt attached to each portion and each attached by wide strips of elastic 15 stitched as at 16 into layers of the material of the belt. The tabs are connected by button and buttonhole engagement. The tabs 14 on the rear portion 10 are provided at each end with a button hole 18 while the tabs 14 on the front portions are provided with spaced buttons 17 either of which may be engaged by the button hole and the total length of the Waist belt thereby adjusted. The elastic strips lie normally within spaced separate tunnels 20 formed in the waist band of the trousers as shown in FIGS. 3 to 6 of the drawings and serving inter alia as guides for the waist belt: The rear portion 10 of the belt is guided in the waist band by a loop 21 stitched to the waist band and is adapted for connection therewith by a button and buttonhole connection shown as a buttonhole 22 seen in the dotted line position of the loop and a button 23 on the inside of the waist belt.

The pairs of tabls 14 connecting the portions 10 and 11 of the belt are interconnected on the side facing the waist band by narrow strips of braid or the like 24 which hold the tabs in place when they are unbuttoned from one another or should a button break off. These strips of braid 24 are conveniently attached to adjacent tabs by stitches passed through the strips and the material and one of the buttons 17 on one tab and by stitches passed through the braid and the back of the material adjacent the button hole 18 on the adjacent tab.

As shown in FIGS. 3 and 5 at the front of the waist band there may be sewn into the waist band a tab or loop 25 with an opening 26 to be engaged by a button 27 or a prong attached to the inside of the belt.

The lining 28 of the waist band may be provided as shown with friction presenting pads 29.

It will be appreciated that the waist belt is easily attached to and detached from the waist band of the trousers and can be replaced by the ordinary waist belt if so desired.

I claim:

1. In self-supporting trousers in combination with a waist band presenting four tunnels and a loop, said tunnels being spaced to provide one at each side of the back and one at each side of the front of the waist band and said loop being disposed substantially centrally of the back of the waist band, a waist belt adapted to fit around the waist band and pass through said tunnels and said loop, said waist belt formed in three major sections comprising a rear section extending across the back of the waist band and two front sections, cooperating means on one end of each of said front sections for attachment with one another at the front of the waist band tabs connected to each end of the rear section and tabs connected to the other end of each front section, wide strips of elastic sewn into each tab and its adjacent section constituting the connecting means therebetween, means for connecting each of the pairs of tabs to each other to form a unitary waist belt and means for adjusting the length of the waist belt comprising spaced buttons on one tab and a buttonhole provided in the tab to be joined therewith.

Claims (1)

1. IN SELF-SUPPORTING TROUSERS IN COMBINATION WITH A WAIST BAND PRESENTING FOUR TUNNELS AND A LOOP, SAID TUNNELS BEING SPACED TO PROVIDE ONE AT EACH SIDE OF THE BACK AND ONE AT EACH SIDE OF THE FRONT OF THE WAIST BAND AND SAID LOOP BEING DISPOSED SUBSTANTIALLY CENTRALLY OF THE BACK OF THE WAIST BAND, A WAIST BELT ADAPTED TO FIT AROUND THE WAIST BAND AND PASS THROUGH SAID TUNNELS AND SAID LOOP, SAID WAIST BELT FORMED IN THREE MAJOR SECTIONS COMPRISING A REAR SECTION EXTENDING ACROSS THE BACK OF THE WAIST BAND AND TWO FRONT SECTIONS, COOPERATING MEANS ON ONE END OF EACH OF SAID FRONT SECTIONS FOR ATTACHMENT WITH ONE ANOTHER AT THE FRONT OF THE WAIST BAND TABS CONNECTED TO EACH END OF THE REAR SECTION AND TABS CONNECTED TO THE OTHER END OF EACH FRONT SECTION, WIDE STRIPS OF ELASTIC SEWN INTO EACH TAB AND ITS ADJACENT SECTION CONSTITUTING THE CONNECTING MEANS THEREBETWEEN, MEANS FOR CONNECTING EACH OF THE PAIRS OF TABS TO EACH OTHER TO FORM A UNITARY WAIST BELT AND MEANS FOR ADJUSTING THE LENGTH OF THE WAIST BELT COMPRISING SPACED BUTTONS ON ONE TAB AND A BUTTONHOLE PROVIDED IN THE TAB TO BE JOINED THEREWITH.
