Application filed September 3, 1910. Serial No. 580,282.
To all 'Lo/Loot 'it may concern,
e it known that we, Jeux A. L'uowio and Jaoui. B. Moses, citizens ot the llnited States, residing at Dallas, in the county ot' Dallas, State of Texas, have invented new and useful llrousers, ot' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to trousers and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement ot' its parts as hereinafter described and shown.
The object of the invention is to so construct a pair ot' trousers that the waist portion thereof may he readily nianiiiulated in order that the trousersl may he easily eenA verted from a stock size into a pair o't trousers having a high waist hand, a low waist hand or a waist hand at a line hetwecn high and low.
One great difficulty in dealing in ready 13o-wear trousers at the present time is to get them exactly the height in the waist that the customer desires. From experience it has been found that at least four pairs of trousers in every ten that are made ready to wear, particularly those which go with suits, are too high in the waist. This is especially true during the summer season when Suspenders are usually discarded and belts substituted. To lower the waist band of a pair of trousers the way they are now constructed is a tedious time consiuning alteration, and even it' successful, in so tfar as the fitting quality is concerned, the change usually leaves the trousers ,in an unsightly condition, and consequently are displeasing to those who are particular about dress.
Therefore it is the object ot the present invention so to construct the trousers that they may readily he converted from high waist trousers to low waist, and from low waist to high waist or very high, without attecting their harmony. The way the trousers are constructed renders it possible for an ordinary tailor to make the desired alteration. 4In fact, the operation of eonversion from low to high, and it'roin high to low is so simple that any one who has an idea of sewing can do the work. It requires hut a. itew moments to effect the change of the position of the waist hand.
In the accompanying di'awing:-l4`igure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion ot one :term of trousers. Fig. 2 is a sectional view cut on the line 2-2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a sectional view cut on the line 3-3 ot Fig. Il. Fig. llA is a sectional view eut on the line 4l-/l oit Fig. il. Fig. 5 is a sectional view cut on the line 5-5 oi Fig. l. Fig. (3 is an inside 'View ol a portion ot the upper part oit the trousers, with parts turned hack. Fig. 7 is an inside view ol a modified :torni ol" the upper portion ot a pair ot trousers.
'ihe `general pattern o'l the pieces ot the trousers, except in the vicinity o't the waist, is not changed or altered troin thatl in common use.
In the present structure the waist hand usually employed in trousers is eliminated and the side pieces ot the trousers are continued and :formed into a` I'lap l which in low waist trousers is turned down upon the inside, as indicated in the several ligure.. The llap .l may he provided at its edge with a taping 2 or in lieu thereof, any other torni oit trimming may he applied. Belt straps 3 are attached to the upper edge portion ot' the trousers at suitable intervals and are et' sutlicient length that at one end they may terminate in the vicinity o t. the edge ot' the flap l and at the other end at some distance helow the upper edge of the trousers when they are adjusted in low waist form.
In the 'lorm ol the invention as illustrated in Figs. l and 3, suspender buttons el. are sewed to the flap l upon the side thereof which is innermost when the [lap is turned down, the same side being outermost when the strap is extended in au upward direction. The hack pieces 5 ot the trousers are sewed directly together at the hack seam in the usual manner hut are not bridged at their upper portion hy a lining, as is the usual custom. llach hack piece 5 is provided with a lining section which terminates at the edge portion ol the back piece to which it is applied. ll'ip pockets 7 are provided in the hack pieces 5 in the usual manner and the lining sections (3 connect at their 'torward edges to pockets S which are attached to the rear edges et the :trent pieces 9 ot' the trousers.
The lower ends o'l the mouths et the side pockets 8 are closed at the side seams 10 by tacl-:s ll. and the upper ends ot' the mouths ot the side pockets 8 are closed hy tacks 12. 'lhese tacks l2 are at the rear edges of the trout pieces 9 and the forward edges of the hack pieces 5. The watch pocket 13 is so positioned that it may he conveniently used whether the trousers he in the forni ot' high,
Cil
low or medium waist. The fly lining 14 is provided with a button hole 15 with which a button hole 16 registers when the flap 1 is turnedV down in the manner as indicated in F ig. 6 of the drawing so thatthe button on the opposite side of the fly passes through both button holes thereby holding the waist band against the trousers and assuring cornfort to the wearer. At the upper end of the back seam of the trousers the back pieces 5 are held together by the tacks 17 and above the said tacks the said side pieces diverge away from each other and in the V thus formed a piece may be inserted for increasing the girth of the trousers.
In the form of the trousers as illust-rated in Fig. 7, the general arrangement hereinbefore described has been followed except that the suspender buttons i are attached to the flap 1 upon that side thereof which is innermost when the flap is extended and the fly 18 is provided at its upper end with a tab 19 which is in alinement with the end of the flap 1 proper and is adapted to be turned down with the same when the trousers are converted into low waist form. By providing the tab 19 at the upper end of the fly 1S, a more substantial foundation is afforded for the button which is usually located at the upper end of the fly and thus when the trousers are converted into high waist form there will be no chance for the Vmaterial to gap at the upper edge of the fly. In this form of trousers when they are converted into the high waist form, the suspender buttons l are concealed from view. This is by reason of the fact that the buttons are upon the inner side of the flap 1 when the flap is extended.
In Fig. 1 the trousers are shown in low waist form. The parts being in the positions as illustrated and it being the desire to convert the trousers into medium o-r high waist form, the lower edge of the flap 1 is disconnected from the side and back pieces of the trousers and is extended vwholly or partially in an upward direction. rIhe tacks 11 and 12 are moved so that themouths of the side pockets S may be Yat appropriate distances below the upper edge of the trousers. Also the belt straps 3 may be readily moved and superfluous lengths cut oft or turned under as desired. Therefore it will be seen that during the process of transposing the waistofthe trousers itis not necessary to disturb the lining sections 6 or their connections with the backpieces 5 and side pockets 8, and thus the harmony ofthe garment is not disturbed by the apparent alteration. Further the changemay be quickly accomplished by an unskilled person, for the reason that it is necessary only to alter the lining sections or to disconnect entirely the edge of the flap 1 from the pieces of the trousers, and remove or re-position the belt strap 3 at the upper edge thereof.
I-Iaving described the invention, what is Y claimed is:
A pair of trousers having a waist band constituting an integral continuation of and of the same thickness as the body of the garment and Yprovided with a crease to permit the band to be folded inwardly, lining sections secured to the inner portion of the trousers and to which the waist band is teIneach being'provided with an opening adapt- 80 ed to register when the band isV folded inwardly to receive a fastener, and suspenderengaging means secured to the band.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
