BELT OR GIRDLE SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
Application filed October 19i1905. Serial No. 283,427.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN G. hIILLIKEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and St ate of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt or Girdle Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My present invention relates to improvements in a belt or girdle support, and has special reference to a support by means of which a military belt, preferably, is supported evenly by a coat, shirt, or the like worn by the wearer, a simple device being provided which is secured to the coat or shirt in the proper place. To aid this support, the invent ion consists of a device of the character embodying novel features of construction, as will presently appear.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a coat, showing the belt in the position it assumes when properly sup ported by my device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of a portion of the coat, the supporting device, and a portion of the belt. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the device in elevation, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the device carried by the belt.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a coat which, as usual, is provided with the seam 2, extending from below the arm to the waist. The belt-supporting device 3 consists of a metal stay or plate 4, which is provided with a series of openings 5, through the body thereof. The upper opening has adapted to pass therethrough a rivet or fastening means 6, which is adapt ed to enthe seam of the coat, so that the plate will be held concealed or out of view, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The re maining holes are used for adjusting the knob or button 7, which is provided with a shank 8 to enter one of the openings and with a head 9, which is adapted to enter an opening or buttonhole 10, formed upon the seam of the coat, so that the knob or button will extend exteriorly of the coat to receive the eye 11 of the belt-support 12, which is secured to the belt 13, as clearly SIIOWII in Fig.
2 of the drawings. As two of these supporting-plates are used, it will be seen that the belt will be properly supported directly from the shoulders of the wearer and carried entirely by the coat, the belt also being sup' ported in a position so that it will not drag down or touch the hip. By this means a uniformity in appearance is secured, and the necessity of wearing the belt tight is also dispensed with.
The extra weight of a sword or a bayonet and scabbard will not have the tendency to drag the belt to one side, the supporting-device being so connected to the coat or shirt as to prevent it sagging. By this means the coat will also be pulled down more smoothly and prevented from wr nkling beneath the belt, and thus render the wearing of a belt more comfortable and attractive.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a body-garment, and a belt, of a device for supporting the belt, consisting of a pair of supports secured to the garment and each provided with a series of openings, a knob for each support having a shank adapted to enter the openings of the support one at a time to regulate the height the belt is to be supported, the said knob eX- tcnding exteriorly of the garment, and a pair of eyed supports carried by the belt adapted to engage the knobs, as set forth.
2. In combination with a body-garment and a belt, of a device for supporting the belt, consisting of a pair of supports secured to the garment and each provided with a series of openings, a knob for each support having a shank adapted to enter the openings of the support one at a time to regulate the height the belt is to be supported, the said knob extending exteriorly of the garment, and means carried by the belt adapted to engage the knob, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDIVIN O. MILLIKEN.
