64907}? L. Campbell PATENT OFFICE GEORGE L. CAMPBELL, OF SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI.
OVERALLS.
Application filed July 26, 1920.
To all whom it my concern:
' Be it known that I, GEoRcnL. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Greene and overalls or one-piece overalls and it consists in means for detachably connecting the lower part, or that part of the lower part which forms the drop-seat with the upper or blouse part and at the same time using this connecting means, or part of it, for closing the breast pockets of the blouse and at .the sametime supporting the pocket and its contents,'the latter being oftentimes heavy and apt to drag upon the blouse front or to get out of the pocket.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 shows a front ment upon the wearer;
Fig. 2 a rear view of the same garment.
Fig. 3 shows a view from the rear of a modification.
Fig. 4 shows my suspender fastening device attached to the button, and
Fig. 5 shows the same device just released from the button.
I provide a union garment or garment l in one piece, the blouse'and trousers part sewed together or--in one piece. The wearer gets into this garment by opening the front at 2, stepping into the legs of the trousers and buttoning up the front. This is not novel. I provide the drop-seat 3 and for this I provide suspenders 4:, which may be attached as shown in Fig. 2 or separable as shown in Fig. 3.
These suspenders are brought over the shoulders to buttons 5, sewed, one on each side to a. strap 6. This strap 6 is stitched to the blouse part as shown and. its lower end is detached fromfthe blouse and hangs free as at 7. a
This strap is provided with a button hole at 8 which engagesja button-f9 on each side. The button 9 is attached to the patch part of a patch pocket 10 though of course it may be sewed clear through the patch to the under part. This patch pocket 10 may open view of my gar- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 18, 1921; Serial No. 399,135.
at the top as shown in Figs. 1 and- 4 or may open on the side as shown at 11, Fig. 5. The breast pocket in this position is sometimes used to carry heavy objects which will be in convenient reach, of the hands of the workman should he need them suddenly. It is often used to carry a watch, pocket-book, or other valuable object. It is desirable that these pockets be closed, and I provide the strap 6 for that purpose. It may be remarked that in Fig. 5 while the strap does not entirely close the pocket yet it holds down the outside. or patch part. This is particularly advantageous in those cases where the user of the garment has to stoop much. In such cases the front of the blouse becomes loose or baggy and. the contents of the pockets are apt to be spilled in the ordinary garment. This bagginess is often assisted by the .weight of the contents of the pocket which if heavy drag the pockets down still farther. The improvement which I have devised has another marked advantage in that it transfers the weight of the pocket and its contents through the strap 6 to the suspenders and thence back to the trousers part.
The suspender thus acts as a sort, of car rier or support for the front of the blouse having its pockets closed and weighted and the'rearor drop part of the garment. At the same time the play of the suspenders on the shoulders is not materially interfered with and the garment thus produced allows perfect freedom of muscular movement while supporting the parts of the garment and the pockets in proper closed position and without danger of loss from. said pockets.
The suspenders may be unbuttoned for removal of the garment, if desired, or for other purposes. I may provide in the suspenders a section 12 of elastic webbing and I may make the whole suspenders of this material, if desired. I may also provide a loop or guard 13, as shown in Fig. 3, to keep the suspenders crossed and from dropping. I providethe end of the suspenders with an adjustable buckle or attachment 14 whereby the length may be varied and I provide, by preference, each suspender at the end with a wire clasp or loop 15 of the form shown.
It will be noted that the joint 16 of this is so made that the clasp yields only to outward pressure so that in going over the button the end 16 is made to pass through the loop 17 and yield outwardly. This prevents to a very large extent accidental detachment, and in consequence, annoyance and hindrance, since any blow or concussion that would strike the suspender button or suspender end would almost always come in such direction as to tend to drive one or the other of the parts of the buckle inwardly or toward each other.
The device is thus free from accidental mishaps in this respect. It will be seen that I have devised a garment of shapely cut, well designed for ordinary use, adapted to yield freely to any condition of muscular effort and one which not only closes and keeps closed the pockets of the wearer, but which transfers the weight of the contents of said pockets directly to the suspenders and to the shoulders of the wearer.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a union garment, in combination, a drop-seat for the lower part thereof, suspenders for said drop-seat, said suspenders having button engaging ends, breast patch pockets on the upper or blouse part of said garment, buttons on the patch parts of said pockets, straps provided with button holes stitched to the upper or blouse part and adapted to engage the pocket buttons to secure the pockets, and buttons secured on the upper parts of said straps, said last named buttons being adapted to be engaged by the suspender ends.
42. In a garment in combination, a blouse part and a trousers part, made in one piece, the trousers part being partly detachable, patch breast pockets on the blouse part, straps to close said pockets, buttons on said straps above said pockets, and supporting means adapted to engage said buttons to support the detachable trousers part, and the pockets and their contents over the shoulders.
3. In a union overalls having a drop-seat part, means attached to said drop-seat part for supporting it, pocket closing straps on the upper" front of the blouse with which said supporting means is adapted to engage and means for detachably connecting said straps with said pockets.
4. In a union overalls, in combination,
. for said seat extending over the shoulders,
breast pockets in the blouse part of said gar ment, straps fastenable to and over said pockets for closing and supporting said pockets and means whereby said supports may be attached to said straps.
6. In a one-piece garment, having trousers and blouse parts, a drop-seat, yielding elastic supports for said seat extending over the shoulders, breast pockets in the blouse part of said garment, straps fastenable to and over said pockets for closing and supporting said pockets and means whereby said supports may be attached to said straps.
7. In a union overalls, in combination, breast pockets adapted to carry heavy objects, buttons on said pockets, straps secured to the garment above said pockets adapted to button on and over said pockets to close and support them, buttons secured to said straps and elastic supporting means adapted to be secured to said buttons.
8. In a union overalls provided with a drop-seat, a suspender therefor. a pocket in the breast of the blouse, a strap for buttoning to and over and supporting the pocket. and means whereby the suspender may be secured to said strap.
9. In a union overalls in combination, a trousers part and a blouse partall in one piece, a drop-seat for the trousers part. a suspender therefor, a side opening breast pocket patched upon the blouse part, a strap and button for supporting it, said strap stitched to the blouse above the pocket, a fastening device on the upper part of said strap and spring means on said suspcnder for engaging said fastening device.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
GEORGE L. CAMPBELL.
