Description

Feb. 7, 1956 E. L. STOGOSKI GARTER CONSTRUCTION Filed July 19, 1954 INVENTOR.
STOGOSKI BY 7/ ATTORNEY United States Patent GARTER CONSTRUCTION Edna L. Stogoski, Bristol, Pa.
Application July 19, 1954, Serial No. 444,165
1 Claim. c1. 2-s1s Women frequently wear a skirt and a blouse, which is wholly separate from the skirt, with the lower portion, or tail, of the blouse tucked into the top of the skirt and held in position solely by engagement of the top of the skirt with the body.
When a person so attired leans backward, forward or side ways, or when such person reaches upwardly with either hand, and even without any special stretching or contortion, the tail of the blouse tends to work up and hang down over the top of the skirt. Furthermore, even when the tail of the blouse does not work up out of the top of the skirt, it is usually rumpled up and presents a lumpy, irregular appearance to the portion of the body below the waist instead of the much desired smooth and well contoured, stream-lined effect.
The object of my invention is to produce an improved garter which can be used for supporting the stockings and pulling down the tail of the blouse, or for pulling down the tail of the blouse only, or for supporting the stockings only.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary and diagrammatic front elevational view showing a garter embodying my invention showing the same used for supporting the stocking and for pulling down the tail of the blouse.
Fig. 2 is a view, partly in vertical section and partly in side elevation, looking in the direction of line 2--2 on Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view, partly in section and partly in elevation, showing the garter when used to pull down the blouse only.
The garter of Figs. 1 to 3 includes a band which is made of elastic tape and to one end of which is suitably attached, as by stitches 12, one end of a piece of tape 14 which is preferably non-elastic, and which is provided with eyelets 16. To the other end of band 10 is attached a buckle 18 the prong of which is adapted to engage one of the eyelets 16. The buckle 18 is preferably attached by looping the end of band 10 through the buckle and stitching it as at 20. The garter thus produced is adapted adjustably to engage the leg above the knee.
In order to provide means for exerting downward pull on the tail of the blouse, each garter is provided with front and rear closed loops 22 which permanently engage rings 24. The rings 24 are also engaged by the lower looped ends 26 of adjustable straps 28 and the upper closed loops 30 which engage clip 38. The straps 28 are provided with slides 33 having teeth 35 for engaging sides of straps 28. To lengthen straps 28, teeth 35 are disengaged from the sides of the straps and the slides 33 are moved downwardly, as viewed in the drawing, and the teeth 35 are reengaged, and vice versa. Each buckle 38 has an open hook like member 39 which is adapted to be detachably engaged by a loop 40 which is secured by stitching 42 or the like, to the bottom edge of a blouse, shirt-waist or the like 43.
To pull up on the stockings, each garter is provided with pendent front and rear loops 46 which are adapted to engage the open end 47 of clips 48 which carry conventional garter clasps 50. Preferably, loops 46 and 22 are made at the opposite ends of straps 51 which are secured to the garters as at 52. If desired straps 28 and 51 may be made of elastic material.
When no stockings are worn the device of Fig. 3 which omits the stocking engaging parts may be used.
Alternately, loops 46 can be readily disengaged from open ends 47 of clips 48 so as to adapt the structure of Figs. 1 and 2 for use in place of the structure of Fig. 3.
It is within the scope of the invention to attach a clasp similar to the open end 39 of garter clasp 50 to upper buckle 38 so as to render the device usable with a blouse which is not provided with tabs 40.
What I claim is:
A garter including a band formed partly of elastic and partly of non-elastic material for encircling the leg of the wearer, a buckle at one end of said band for adjustably engaging the other end thereof, a tab formed of elastic material and secured to said band transversely thereof with the upper end of said tab formed into a closed loop which extends above said band and with the lower end thereof formed into a loop which extends below said band, when said band is in leg encircling position, a ring permanently engaged by the upper looped end of said tab, a clip having a lower closed eye and an upper open hook and an adjustable strap having a lower closed loop permanently engaging said ring and an upper closed loop permanently engaging said eye of said clip, the open hook of said clip being constructed for detachable engagement with a closed loop carried by the lower portion of a blouse, or the like, and the lower loop extending below the edge of said band being adapted detachably to engage a stocking supporting garter or the like.
