2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in garters and has particular reference to a detachable stocking-supporting means such as employed on womens corsets and girdles, this application being a division of my co-pending application, Serial No. 32,501, filed July 22, 1935.
In garters of this general type it has been heretofore customary to utilize two fabric loops for joining the stocking-attaching device to the garment, one of said loops being permanently secured to said garment, and the other, which carries said device and is made of elastic material, being joined to the first loop by a connecting element adapted for detachable engagement with the latter loop so that the entire garter assembly, exclusive of the first loop, may be disconnected from the garment when it is being laundered.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved garter of the kind referred to above 90 which is of simple, practical and economical construction and wherein the necessity of using two fabric loops or strips between the garment and stocking-attaching device is eliminated, thereby efiecting a considerable saving in material and a 95 corresponding reduction in time and labor in the assembly operations.
Another object is to join a connecting element, which is detachable from a fabric strip depending from a garment, to the loop member of a garter assembly by means of a link, and to cover said link by the looped end of the stocking-at taching tab which is directly connected to and supported by said connecting element.
The above and other objects will appear more 35 clearly from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which illustrates one embodiment of the inventive idea.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a garter assembly constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an edge elevation thereof, partly in section, and
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 withthe single connecting fabric strip, utilized to join the garter assembly to a garment, removed and a part of the stocking-attaching tab broken away.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the
As previously suggested in connection with known constructions, it has been customary to sew 55 a short fabric loop directly to the lower edge of a garment. To this loop is detachably joined a connecting element and secured to the latter is one end of a second elongated fabric loop of elastic material, the other end of which carries the stocking-attaching means. In contradistinction 5 to such known construction, the present invention contemplates the use of only a single elongated strip of elastic fabric or webbing 5 the ends of which are stitched or otherwise secured to the garment 4 so that said strip is looped at its other 10 end, the looped strip being of sufiicient length to suspend the stocking-attaching means the proper distance below the garment. If desired, the length of said strip may be made adjustable in the ordinary manner well, known in the art. The 16 stocking-attaching means and the connecting element utilized to join the same to the garment are attached to the lower or looped end of the strip 5 as will appear in the course of the description. 20 The loop member 8 comprising one of the elements of the garter assembly is provided at its upper end with a cross bar 1 spaced from an adjacent portion of the member to form an opening 8 the purpose of which will presently appear. 26 Separate from the loop member 6 but associated therewith is a connecting element 9 joined to said loop member by a link iii which is bent about the bar '5 and extended through a slot ii in the lower portion of the connecting element 9. A looped 30 stocking-attaching tab l2, made of fabric or other flexible material and carrying button 13 adjacent its lower end which cooperates with the lower constricted end of the loop member 5, is extended along the back of said loop member for a part of its length, with a portion of said tab extended through the opening 8 in the member 6 and thence over the upper edge of the lower portion of the connecting element i, said upper edge having a recess M for the reception or" said tab. 49 The latter is thus looped about and covers the link H1 and is suspended from said connecting element, the recess 54 in the latter preventing lateral shirting of the tab with respect to said element.
The element 9 is further provided with a bar i5 spaced from the lower portion thereof to form an entrance slot for the lower end of the looped strip 5, and the free end of said bar is formed with a bill 16 which prevents the connecting element from becoming accidentally detached from said strip.
What is claimed is:
1. In a garter, a stocking-attaching means including a loop member and a looped buttoncarrying tab, a connecting element having a slot 55 withan open end for recei adapted for attachment also receiving one of the said connecting element slot, and a link engagin connected to said loop 2. In a garter, a stocking eluding a loop member and ing tab. a connecting element having a a1 a looped buttonving one end of a strip an open end for receiving one end of a strip to a garment and for adapted for attachment to a garment and for also ends of said looped tab, receiving one o! the ends of said looped tab, one further having a second edge of said slot having a recess therein for reg in said second slot and ceiving said endof the looped tab, said connecting element further having a second slot and a link -attaching means inengaging in the latter slot and connected to said carryloop member. at with ADOLPH J. SOBEL.
