Corporation, New York N. Y., assignor to The Gluckin New York, N. Y., a corporation of Application May 22, 1946, Serial No. 671,423
' 1 Claim. (o1; 2-42) I This invention relates to garments or wearing apparel employing breast covering portions and to a supporting frame for detachable mounting in connection with the garment in supporting the breast covering portions upon the body of the wearer, While permitting detachment of the frame in the laundering. or otherwise cleaning of the garment. More particularly, the invention deals with the formation of channels or chambers bordering part of the breast covering portions of the garment with elongated openings into said channels facilitating attachmentand detachment of supporting frames with channelled portions of the garment.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood fromrthe following description, when taken together withtheaccompanying drawing,
showing my improved framemounting with part 'of the, construction broken away..
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing another form of garment and mounting of the frame therein.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale; and
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In the use of frames of the type and kind under consideration, in support of garments such as brassires and the like upon the body of the wearer and, particularly, in supporting breast covering portions of garments upon the body of the wearer around the breasts, it has been the practice to provide on either the inner or outer surface of the garment a slit facilitating attachment and detachment of the supporting frame with the garment. This method of procedure has been objectionable, first, from the standpoint of the difficulty in attaching the frame with and detaching the same from the garment and, moreover, the slitting on such surfaces of the garment has tended to mar the neat and finished appearance in the garment and has, further, brought part of the exposed portion of the frame upon either the inner or outer surface of the garment.
To overcome these objectionable features, I provide an elongated and, preferably, buttonhole type of opening at the marginal edge portion of the garment, or the breast covering portions thereof at inner adjacent edges of the cups or pockets, as such breast covering portions are usually defined, so that the frame may be freely and 65 outer edges side and back .for mounting the garment pletely,
nel forming strip I2, 20
easily attached and detached with respect to the pockets. The buttonholes are made sufficiently long to facilitate free insertion and removal of coupling loop ends on the frame, the buttonholes being disposed in a plane common to the plane of the loops, thus facilitating and expediting the aforesaid operations.
In illustrating one adaptation of my invention, I have shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing one type of brassire which comprises two substantially similar cups or pockets III, Ii), having at their straps as at H, II upon the body of the These straps are not shown comas they are well known and form no specific part of the present invention. ,1
Attached to the inner and outer sides; and upper edge portion of the pockets I0, I 0' 'isra chan- IZ', preferably :having a cushioned facing, as indicated, for example, at l3 inFig. 4 of the drawin to cushion the" frame II, where it rests upon the body of the wearer. The strip I2, I2 is stitched to the said edges of wearer.
jthe pockets I0, Ill, as seen at I5, I5, the frame I4 or looped or horseshoe-shaped end portions l6, l6 of which are arranged in the channels of the strips I2, I2, for example, the channel I? of the strip I2, as seen in Fig. 4. The said looped or horseshoe-shaped members I 6, l6 may be said to define breast encircling portions of the frame and these portions terminate at their outer free ends in inturned members I8, I8, which seat in the corresponding ends of the strips I2, I2. The other ends of said members IS, IS are formed into retaining loops I9, I9 which seat in the other ends of the strips [2, I2 at points below buttonhole or similar openings 29, 26 formed in inner edge portions of the strips and of such length as to provide passage of the loop ends I9, I9 therethrough in drawing the strips longitudinally with respect to the members I6, It in the direction of the loop ends [9, I9 of the frame. This operation is performed in detaching, as Well as attaching, the frame with the pockets.
The members l6, It or the loops I9, I9 are integrally joined in a central bridging or coupling portion 2|, which comprises a center spring loop 22 joining the loops I9 in shoulder portions 23, 23'. Arranged on the loop 22 and the shoulder portions 23, 23 is a tube or sleeve 2d of plastic or other material, preferably of a color to match or be in harmony with the color of the pockets I I], I 0'.
In Fig. 2 of the drawing is shown a modified form of construction, in which two similar cups or pockets 25, 25 are employed with a frame 2'0 mounted in channel forming strips 21, 2?, similar to the strips l2, 12, but located on inner and lower edge portions of the pockets, rather than as shown in Fig. 1. In other words, the brassiere, as seen in Fig. 1, is adapted primarily as a strapless type of brassire which does not employ shoulder straps; whereas in Fig. 2, parts of shoulder straps are indicated at 28, 28 for supporting upper end portions 29, 2 of the pockets upon the body of the wearer.
At 39, 39' are shown side straps or bands for mounting the brassiere around the body of the wearer. These straps or bands are broken away, as the showing thereof is not important for a full understanding of the present invention.
In Fig. 2 of the drawing, the: strips 2?, 21 have buttonhole or similar openings 31, 3|, adjacent upper inner edge portions 32, 32 of the pockets,
instead of at lower edge portions, as in Fig. 1. In Fig. 1 of the drawing, the bridging member 2! has the spring loop thereof directed upwardly; whereas in Fig. 2, a corresponding bridging member 21' has its spring loop directed downwardly. At 33, 33 are shown loop ends of the frame similar to the ends [9, i9 and these ends are attachable and detachable through buttonhole openings 3|, Si in the same manner, as described in connection with the showing of Fig. 1 of the drawing.
In Fig. 2, the breast encircling members 34, 34' of the frame are of a definite form and having more or less straight end portions, as at 35, 35, near the outer lower portions of the pockets 25, 25'. In fact, the inturned ends 35, 36 are disposed adjacent the side seams 37, 37' of the brassiere, or, in other words, where the side extensions 38, 38' of the pockets 25, 25 join the strapsor bands 39, 30. This construction extends the frame support to the sides of the garment beyond boundaries of the breasts; whereas the inner and lower portions of the members 34, 34 substantially encircle the breasts.
Having fully described my invention, what I iii '4 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A brassiere comprising a pair of breast pockets having inner and outer edges joined by curved marginal edges, means at the curved marginal edges of each pocket forming a channel extending from the inner to the outer edges of the pocket, a supporting frame comprising a pair of curved breast encircling members and a center yieldable bridge member joining and spacing said curved members, means attached to outer edges of the pockets for supporting the brassire about the body of a wearer, inner adjacent marginal edges of said pockets having elongated openings extending longitudinally of said edges, said openings being inwardly of the channel ends, facilitating insertion and removal of the curved members of the frame with respect to said channels, outer ends of said curved members extending to outer side edges of the pockets, adjacent ends of the curved members of said frame, where they join the bridging member, having elongated coupling loops adapted to extend into said channel ends in retaining the frame against displacement from the pockets, and said openings being of a length substantially equal to the length of said coupling loops.
