1. TORCHIA. LADY'S HOUSE DRESS.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 19. 1920.

j mum/ram Wuk JOSEPH TORCHIA, F CINCINNATI, OHIO.
LADYS HOUSE-DRESS.
Specification of Letters ratent. Patented J an. 18 1921.
Application filed March 19, 1920. Serial No. 367,048.
To all whom it ma concern:
Be it known tliat I, JOSEPH TORCHIA, a citizen of the United States, residing in Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladies House- Dresses, of which the following isa specification.
The object of my invention is to provide means for automatically adjusting and regulating the size of the dress around the waist to adapt it to persons of varying sizes or to varying conditions of the wearer.
My invention consists in providing the dress with a waistband having a longitudinal passageway therein, with an opening at each end thereof, a button adjacent each opening and an elastic band inserted in said passa eway throu h said 0 enings and detacha 1 connecte to said uttons to automatical adjust the goods to the form and size oft e wearer. 1
My invention also consists in the detailsof construction and arrangement and in the parts and combination of parts as herein set forth and claimed.
In the drawings: y Figure 1 is a perspective view of the dress in use looking at it from the front;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view looking at it from the rear;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the detach able elastic band;
Fig. 4 is a rear view of a ortion of the dress, on an enlarged scale i1 ustrating my invention; 7
Fig- 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of 4; and
g. 6 is a section on the. line 66 of 4.
n the embodiment of my invention as illustrated, and which shows a preferred construction, the waistband 7 com rises two plies 8 and 9 secured to thewalst 10 alon its upper edge by stitches 11 and to the s irt 12 along its lower edge by stitches 13, forming a passageway 14 between said pl1es and said stitches respectivel throughout a portion of its len th, pre erably the rear, near one side of w ich an opening 15 extends through ply 8 to passage-way 14 and at the other side an. openm 16 is formed in ply 8 to communicate wlth said passage-way. 'A button 17 is attached to said band near opening 15 and button 18 is attached to said band near opening 16.
An elastic band 19 having a metal eyelet 20 upon one end and a similar metal eyelet 21 on the other end isadapted to be in serted through said openings and passageway and to be'attached to said buttons b means of said eyelets. When so attache the band, with the exception of the eyelet, is concealed within the waistband and the tension of the elastic band automatically draws the fullness of the goods and supports the gathersthus formed in compact and snugly fitting form to the body of the wearer, as shown in Fig. 2, and at the same time, draws any excess fullness of the goods from thefront to give it a neat fit as shown in Fig. 1. a The metaleyelets 20 and 21 respectively are formed of wire bent in the shape shown in Fig. 3, the larger end having the wire formed straight to receive and engage the looped end of band 19 and taperingtherefrom toward the free end which is formed circular but with a contracted neck between the tapering portion and the circular portion in order that the threads or other button fastening means may be engaged therewith by first inserting the button through the tapering portion and then drawing it above the circular portion, thus forming a very convenient and efiicient detachable connecting means between the band and the its elasticity upon being laundried, whereas,
with the use of my invention, the elastic band may be readily detached and removed before the dress is laundried, and then easily and quickly inserted for use after it is laundried, thus preserving the integrity of the elastic band.
It will be apparent that my invention is capable of some modification without dearture from the scope or spirit thereof, as or instance, the passage-way may be formed between the waistband and the body of the goods, instead of being formed between plies of the band interposed between the waist and skirt.
Having described my invention and its manner of use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a house dress having a Waist and skirt, a two ply waistband Overlapping the lower edge of said waist and the upper edge of said skirt and stitched to each of said edges respectively whereby a longitudinal passage-Way is formed in said waistband between said Waist and skirt, said waistband having openings leading to said passage- 1 openings and passage-way and said eyelets 1 being adapted to detachably engage said buttons resp bsnPH TORCHIA
