SUSPENDERS.
'Appncation iednovember 16,1921. serial No. 515,580.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that 1, 1V AsrrrNoroN M. POTTER', a citizen of the United States, residing at Freedom, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have 'invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Suspenders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The present invention has for its purpose to provide a device of this kind wherein the elastic straps connect at the front and back, so that the shoulder engaging portions of the strap will fit closely along the base of thefneclr in accordance with the weight suspended. The elastic straps which pass over the shoulders assume angles in thefront and at the back.
Another purpose is the provision of a pair of suspenders, by which the weight of the clothing suspended therefrom, does not interfere with the movement of the shoulders in any direction.
Still another purpose is the provision of a pair of Suspenders, which is simple, erficient and practical in construction, and may be cheaply manufactured and sold at a fair profit.
TNhile the design and construction at present illustrated and set forth are deemed preferable, it is obvious that as a result of a reduction of the invention to amore practical form for commercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible of changes, and the right to these changes is claimed, provided they are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be herein-V after set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the improved Suspenders constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the position of the straps when engaged with the shoulders of the wearer;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the Suspenders removed from the wearer;
Figure 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a sectional view on line 4 4 of Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is a detail view showing how the extension strap 7 is connected to the straps 2 and 3, illustrating the cover piece removed.
Referring to the drawings, lldesignates i a pair of Suspenders as a Whole, which comprises a pair of elastic strapsv 2.and 3, constructed of any suitable material, such as used for Suspenders. rhe opposite ends of the straps 2 and 3' are spliced together as shown at f1 and 5. These splices are formed by irs't cutting the straps on angles, wand theseveral edges are stitched togetherasat 6. Stitched at 9 to the spliced endsvv of both ends of the pair O15-Suspenders are the'fexl' tension straps 7 and 8. Theextension -7 is constructed of elastic material, and vits end is folded, and has an adjustableibuckle"connectionlO'with its bodyA portion Asuit'able metal suspender button engaging loop-11 is'l engaged inthe fold of the eXtens-ion7, and 1s designed to engage with `afbuttoironthe trousers, particularly in the front.y 1t isthe purpose of the Suspenders to wear them uni der the topor outer shirt, and in orderto connect the buttonl engagingloop v`with the button, the material of the shirt is fitted overy the button and `the button forced spo through the'loop. 1n this way thesuspend-v ers vare hidden.
Where the extension strap? is attached to the splices of the straps 2an`d 3, "shields or fabric cover pieces 12 are stitchedas at 13 to the straps 2 and 3 and yto the 4extensionstrap 7. These cover shields or Ypiecesare on opposites'ides of the suspenders.- In fact `the cover pieces-are designed to be constructed leather such as used in the construction of f Suspenders.
A metal loop 18 engages the loop 14, and connected to the metal loop 18 is the'loop end 19 of a folded strap of leather or other pliable material 20. The opposite end portions of the folded strap of leather are stitched at 21 to the spliced ends of the downwardly diverging elastic straps 22. The downwardly diverging elastic straps 22 have their lower ends spaced a considerable distance apart, in order to provide suitable means for holding the trousers at the rear. Suitable metallic loops are carried by the lower ends of the diverging elastic straps 22, and are designed to receive the suspender buttons 23 at the rear of the trousers.
The Suspenders are worn under the outer or top shirt, the single metallic loop in front being engaged with the outer shirt and the suspender' button centrally in front, thus preventing the garments from sagging down, holding them uniformly in a certain position on the body, so that the clothing at no time requires adjustment. The lower ends of the diverging elastic straps 22 are arranged farther apart than those of the ordinary sus` penders, and relieves the pulling up action of the trousers when the wearer is stooping, and also relieves the tension of the trousers at the crotch.
Owing to this particular construction of Suspenders with the lower ends of the diverging straps 22 spaced a considerably distance apart, the distance between the points of the adjustment of the straps 22 to theI trousersfis somewhat greater than the spacing of the corresponding straps of the ordinary trousers, so that together with the particular construction of the Suspenders, a much greater part of the strain and pulling is relieved from the wearers shoulders when the wearer is in stooping posture. By providing a pair of Suspenders to be worn under the outer or top shirt, it permits the wearer to adjust the amount of fullness of the shirt overy `the shoulders, and also due to the shirt being attached to the trousers by the metallic loop fasteners, the shirt is prevented from working up out of the trousers. Owing to the straps 2 and 3 engaging on the shoulders and extending toward each other at the front and rear, they will fit closely along the base of the sides of the neck, and this tendency is greatly increased by the weight of the trousers, and for this reason the'straps over the shoulder hardly ever need adjustment, the fact is that the straps tend to work up toward the neck instead of down over the arm.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed is:
l. A pair of Suspenders comprising a pair of elastic straps adapted to engage over the shoulders of a wearer, said straps converging toward and connected together at their opposite forward and rear ends, means connected to the forward ends for operatively connecting the straps to the front of the trousers, shields overlying and secured tothe rear ends of the straps, a strap secured between the shields and being folded adjacent its unattached end, a buckle attached to the terminal of the strap beyond the fold and operatively and adjustably receiving the body of the strap between the fold and where the end of the strap is secured between the shields, and a pair of diverging elastic straps connected together at their converging ends, means connecting the converging ends of the lastvmentioned straps to the fold, and means attached to the diverging ends of the last mentioned straps for attaching them to the rear of a pair of trousers.
2.. A pair of Suspenders, comprising elastic straps adapted to engage over the shoulders of a wearer, and converging together and connected at their forward and rear ends, means operatively connected to the converged connected rear ends of the straps for connecting them to the r ar of a pair of trousers, a pair of shields secured to the converged connected forward ends of the straps, a strap secured between said shields and being folded, means connected to the fold of the last mentioned strap for operatively connecting the same to the front of the trousers, a double metallic loop connected to the terminal of the last mentioned strap beyond said fold and operatively receiving the body of said last mentioned strap for adjustably tightening the Suspenders in front.
ln testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.,
WASHINGTON M. POTTER.
