Be it known that 1, ANDREW W. LOGAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Memphis, Shelby county, Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers for Shirt-Waist Suits, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying .drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to trousers for shirtwaist suits; and the object of my invention is to provide the waistbands of trousers with a flexible stiffening-band, the purpose of which is to yieldingly maintain the top of the trousers in proper position at the waist-line of the wearer and to prevent any point of the waistband of said trousers from sagging.

My improvement is especially applicable for trousers which are supported only at the sides over the hips, and it is therefore necessary that the tops of such trousers be so constructed as that the front and back will not sag to present an unsightly appearance, but retain the same horizontal plane with the sides, which are the points of suspension.

My invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more clearly set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the flexible metallic band that is placed in the waist band of the trousers. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the upper portion of a pair of trousers equipped with my improved stiffeningband. Fig. 3 is a front elevationof the meeting ends of the stiffening-band. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an enlarged horizontal section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is an enlarged vertical section taken on the line 6 6 of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a detail in perspective, illustrating one of a pair of loops that are attached to the stiffening-band at the sides of the trousers.

Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates the stiffening-band I make use of and which is preferably a continuous thin met allic strip or band which will readily bend and give in a horizontal plane, but which is of sufiicient width to prevent its yielding or giving in a vertical plane. One end of this band is slightly widened, as indicated by 2, and in this widened portion is formed a vertical slot 3. Formed integral withthe top and bottom edges of the widened portion 2 to the right hand of the ,vertical slot 3 are the rearwardly-extending bent portions 4, that arebent toward one another, as indicated by 5, their ends meeting midway between the top, and bottom 'edges of the portion 2. Thus a housing is formed on the inside of the band 1 immediately to the right of the slot 3. The opposite end of the band 1 is doubledbackwardly to form a hook 6, and when this hook is engaged through the slot 3 the backwardly-bent portion of said hook seats in the pocket formed by the bending of the portion 5, and thus the stiffening band cannot give or yield vertically at the point where the ends of said band join.

7 indicates the goods from which the trousers are made and which forms the waistband portion, and 8 the lining thereto. The band 1 is located between the portion of the goods 7 and the lining 8 in the lower portion of the waistband in such a manner as that the hook 6 extends from one end of the waistband, and the opposite end, provided with the slot 3 and the pocket, projects from the opposite end of said waistband. The ends of the band are provided with suitably-arranged perforations, such as 9 through which thread may be stitched to correctly locate the stiffening-band in the waistband. Suitable fiexible loops 10 are arranged on the band 1 and project upwardly through the waistband at the sides of the trousers to be engaged by buttons carried by the suspenderstraps. Rows of stitching 11 extend from the front ends of the waistband in opposite directions toward the sides of the trousers, which stitching passes through the material 7 and the lining 8 immediately above the top edge of the stiffening-band 1, and a corresponding row of stitching 12 extends along the back of the waistband immediately above the top edge of the band 1. These rows of stitching do not extend around the sides of the waistband over the hips, and they are for the purpose of maintaining the band 1 in position in the lower portion of the waistband. The band 1 when so located very effectually maintains all parts of the waistband of the trousers in the same horizontal plane, and no part thereof can sag when in position upon the wearer and suspended only at the sides.

The hook 6 forms a simple means of securing the meeting ends of the band 1 together, and said hook entering the pocket to the side of the slot 3 very effectually prevents the flexible band from sagging at the meeting point of its ends.

The flexible band of my improved trousers readily yields to any movement of the wearer, is thoroughly concealed in the waistband of the trousers, and provides means whereby said trousers may be properly and conveniently supported on opposite sides.

I claim 1. The combination with a pair of trousers, provided with the usual waistband, of a horizontally-flexible band inserted in the waistband, a pocket formed integral at one end of said band, there being a slot in said band to one side of the pocket, and a hook formed integral with the opposite end of the band; substantially as specified.

2. The combination with a pair of trousers, provided with the usual waistband, of a continuous metallic band inserted in the waistband, a hook formed integral with one end of said continuous band, a pocket formed on said opposite end to receive the end of the hook, and loops secured to the metallic band at the sides of the trousers for engaging the suspenders; substantially as specified.

3. The combination with a pair of trousers, provided with the usual Waistband, of a horizontally-flexible metallic band inserted in said waistband, suitable stitching throu h the waistband and lining thereof to 'rigid y position the flexible band, a hook formed integral with one end of said band, there being a slot and pocket on the opposite end of the band for engaging the hook, and loops secured to the flexible band that project upwardly from the waistband on the sides of the trousers; substantially as specified.
