Description
H. F. HURD. FOLD COLLAR. APPLICATION FILED MAY 6. 1916 Patented Oct. 10, 1916.
.xliarney 0.. WA snlnc run. a. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUBBARD F. HURD, OE TROY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO CLUETT, PEABODY & CO. INC., OF TROY, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
FOLD-COLLAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 6, 1916. Serial No. 95,7 88.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUBBARD F. HURD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fold-Collars, of which the following is a specification.
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
In the type of fold-collar to which this invention relates the knotted scarf or necktie tends to force outwardly into undue prominence the lower corner portions of the folded-over top.
The principal object of the invention is to hold in proper position, closely adjacent to the band, the lower corner portions of the folded-over top of such a fold-collar.
Other objects will appear in connection with the following description.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a front view of the separated broken-away end-portions of a fold-collar embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view in perspective of the collar with the ends secured together by a collar button, with the top-corner-retaining flap unbuttoned. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, with the top-corner-retaining flap buttoned.
Referring to the drawings wherein the in vention is shown in preferred form, 1 is the band of the collar having the usual short end 2, and long end 3, each provided with a button-hole 4, adapted to receive a collar button or stud 5, whereby the ends of the band are detachably secured together and to the neck-band of a shirt in use. The top 6, is attached to the band in the usual manner and is adapted to be folded over upon the band, as shown in the drawings.
hen the collar is buttoned upon the neck-band of a shirt, with a necktie (not shown) encircling the band of the collar, and the knot of the necktie occupying the space 7 between the ends of the folded-over top, the necktie tends to force outwardly and into unsightly prominence, the lower corner portions 8, of the folded-over top. As a means to prevent this outward displacement of the lower corner portions of the folded-over top, I attach to the lower edge of the band, preferably to the lower edge of the long end 3 thereof, a flap 9, provided with a button-hole 10 adapted to engage the front collar button 5. The flap 9, is of sufficient extent to, when buttoned, form pockets adapted to receive the lower corner portions 8 of the folded-over top.
In applying the collar, it is first buttoned upon the neck-band of the shirt in the usual manner, leaving the flap 9, unbuttoned and depending from the band, as shown in Fig. 2. The tie may be then knotted in the usual manner after which the flap 9, is folded upward over the corner portions 8 of the folded-over top, and is buttoned upon the front collar button 5, as shown in Fig. 3. The flap 9, when buttoned acts as a strap to hold the lower corner portions of the folded-over top in close proximity to the band in opposition to the tendency of the knotted necktie to displace such corner portions of the top.
That I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A fold-collar having a band, a foldedover top and a flap attached to the lower edge of the band, and foldable upwardly over the lower corner portions of the folded over top, and having means for detachably securing the end of the upwardly folded flap to the band.
2. A fold-collar having a band provided with end button-holes adapted to receive the front collar button, a folded-over top, and a flap secured to the bottom edge of one end of the band, said flap being foldable upwardly over the lower portions of the foldedover top, and being provided with a buttonhole adapted to engage said front collar button.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of May, 1916.
HUBBARD F. I'IURD.
