Be it known thatI, HUBBARD F. HURD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy. county of Rensselae-r, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soft Fold-Collars,

of which the followingis a specification.

Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marlted thereon, which form a part of this to provide a cheap and simple means whereby the ends of the folded-over top can be so held in close relationship to the band of the collar.

Other objects will appear in connection with the following description. I

Figure 1 of the drawings is aplan view of a soft fold-collar embodying my invention with the top of the collar opened out flat.

Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the same showing the inner side of the band with the top folded-over as in use.

Fig. 3 is a front view of a broken-away end-portion of the collar, and a neighboring broken-away portion of a shirt illustrating the manner in which the first-buttoned end of the band with its top-retaining strap is buttoned to the front collar-button.

Fig. at is a similar view showing the ends of the collar fully buttoned upon said collarbutton.

Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1 of a broken-away end-portion of av fold-collar showing the strap-engaging loop formed as an integral part of the inner facing-ply of the top of the collar.

Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1 is the band, and 2 the top of a collar. Both the top and'the band may be made soft or not stitlly starched.

The band is provided with the usual end buttonholes, 3 and 1, adapted to engage the Specification of Letters Patent.

front collar-button, 5, whereby said ends of the band are detachably secured to the neckband, 6, of a shirt, 7, in the usual manner.

The band may also be provided with theusual back buttonhole, 8, or such other fastening means as may be desired.

The top is folded along its line of attachment to the band over upon the outer side of the band in the usual manner.

In carrying out my invention, I attach 1 by stitching, 9, to the outer side-of the band at a substantial distance inwardly fromthe respective end buttonholes, 3 and 4, one end of a strap, 10, the other end of which is provided with a buttonhole, 11, adapted to register with the respective neighboringbuttonhole, 3 or 4, when the strap lies flatly against the band.

'I also provide the top of the collar with transverse strips of tape, 12, attached to the inner side-0f the top at their ends by stitching, 13,- thereby forming loops through which the respective straps, 10, may be passed, which loops may if desired, be sutficiently extended to also receive the necktie not shown.

These tape-loops, 12, are located about opposite the middle of the respective straps, 10. In applying the collar, the straps, 10, are

inserted between the respective tapes, 12, and

the folded-over top of the collar, as shown in Figs. 2 and l.

The first-buttoned end of the band is then buttoned upon the front collar button, 5, which projects from the shirt neckband, and the strap, 10, on that end of the collar is also buttoned upon said front collar-button, 5, as shown in Fig. 3.

The last-buttoned end of the band is then buttoned upon said front collar-button, 5, in the usual manner with said last-buttoned end of the band inserted between the band andthe folded-over top at the other'end of the collar, and the strap, 10, on said lastbuttoned end' of the collar is also buttoned upon said front collar-button, 5, as shown in Fig. 4.

hen the collar isthus buttoned upon the shirt neckband, each of the straps, 10, being then attached at both ends to the band with its intermediate portion in engagement with the neighboring loop. 12, on the folded- 'over top, serves to hold the neighboring end of the folded-over top in close relationship to the band, thus properly supporting the ends of the folded-over top.

For certain purposes of the invention, the form of the strap is immaterial, so long as its end which is inserted between the loop, 12, and the folded-over top of the collar is adapted to engage the same collar-button or fastening device which is engaged by the adjacent end buttonhole in the band.

The form of the loop, 12, is also immaterial so long as it is adapted to be engaged by the strap to hold the folded-over top in close relationship to the band of the collar.

By the means above described, I am able to avoid the use of buttons on the collar as a means for holding the ends of the foldedover top in proper position with relation to the band and the collar can be readily laundried, as the straps, 10, and loops, 12, can

be made of launderable material.

The straps, '10, and loops, 12, are wholly concealed in use by the folded-over top of the collar except where the buttonholed end of the strap on the last-buttoned end of the collar is exposed to view between the ends of the folded-over top.

As this exposed strap-end is covered by v the necktie, the collar in use presents no visible evidence of the means whereby the ends of the folded-over top are held in position.

If the tape, 12, is made sufficiently long to accommodate both the strap, 10, and the necktie, the tape may be stitched to the top of the collar at an intermediate point as at 14:, to form separate loops for the strap, 10, and the necktie respectively.

If desired, the tape, 12, maybe dispensed with and a loop, 15, adapted to be engaged by the strap, 10, may be formed by making two transverse buttonholed slits, 16, in the inner facing-ply of the top, as shown in top attached at its inner end to the band and provided in its outer end with a buttonhole adapted to register with said end buttonhole in the band; and means on' the inner side of said folded-over top adapted to be engaged by said strap.

2. A fold-collar having a band provided with an end buttonhole; a folded-over top; a strap between saidband and said foldedover top attached. at its inner end to the band and provided in its outer end with a buttonhole adapted to register with said end buttonhole in the band; and a tape attached to the inner side of said folded-over top forming aloop through which said strap is adapted to be passed.

3. A fold-collar having a band provided with an end buttonhole; a folded-over top; a strap between said band and said foldedover top attached at its inner end to said band and provided in its outer end with a buttonhole adapted to register with said end buttonhole in the band; and a tape extending transversely of the inner side of said folded-over top to which it is attached at its ends and also at an intermediate point, forming separate loops, one adapted to receive said strap and the other to receive a necktie.
