Description

UNITED TATES PATENT (Danton,
RICHARD O. DAVIES, OF NEWV ARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 221,792, dated November 18, 1879; application filed October 4, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD O. DAVIES, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirts, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a shirt to which myimprovcmenthas beenapplied. Fig.
2 is a perspective view of a cuff and sleeve, showing my improvement in use. Fig. 3 is a detailed section taken through the line a: as, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a cuff and sleeve, the improvement not being in use. Fig. 5 is a detailed section taken through the line yy, Fig. 4.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this inventionis to furnish shirts having fastening devices permanently connected with their neck-bands and cutfs.
The invention consists in the combination, with the neck-band and cuffs of shirts, of tabs having buttons fastened to their free ends, so-
that the said buttons may be used for securing the neck'bands and cuffs when required, as will be hereinafter fully described.
In shirts as ordinarily constructed at the neck-band and culfs, if the studs by which the said parts are connected should be lost, or if from any cause it may not be desired to use the studs, there is no way provided for securing. the said parts. To remedy this difficulty and enable the wearer to secure the neck-band, collar, and cuffs when he may have lost his studs or may not wish to use them, I attach tabs A to the neck-band B and to the cuffs 0, near the button-holes, and fasten buttons D to the free ends of the said tabs A. The tabs A may be strips of tape or other cloth secured in the seams that connect the neckband B and cuffs O to the body and sleeves of the shirt, or they may be formed by an extension of the lining of the said parts. When the improvement is required for use the tab A is bent over and the button D is passed through the button-hole near which it is placed, and the button can then be used to fasten the neck-band or cuffs or secure a collar with the same facility as though the button D had been sewed to the said part. When the improvement is not in use the tabs A are allowed to hang free, ready for use when required.
Another advantage of this improvement is that the buttons are out of the way and cannot be broken off by the sad-iron when the shirts are being ironed.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a shirt, the combination, with the neck band and cuffs, of tabs A, having buttons D fastened to their free ends, substantially as herein shown and described, so that the said buttons D may be used for securing the neckband and cuffs when required, as set forth.
RICHARD O. DAVIES.
