SOPHIA OTTILLIA GRAVE, OF EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF TIIREE-FOURTHS TO HENRY. DAVID MERWARTH, CHRISTIAN MER- iVARTH, AND CARL P. GRAVE, OF EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHIRT-SLEEVE SHORTENER AND CUFF-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,93 5, dated May 12, 1903.
Application filed July 30. 1902- Serial No. 117,613. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, SOPHIA OTTILLIA GRAVE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, county of Northampton, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shirt Sleeve Shorteners and Cuff-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvementin shirt-sleeve shorteners and cuff-fasteners, and has for its object to provide means attached tothe wristband of shirt-sleeves whereby the shirt-sleeve can be shortened as desired, and also providing snap-buttons, one half of which are'secured t0 the wristband and the other half to the cuff for the purpose of fastening the cult to the wristband.
With these ends in view this inven tionconsists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to whichthis invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which--- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a shirt-sleeve, showing my improvements applied thereto; Fig. 2, a similar view to Fig. 1, showing the opposite side of the shirtsleeve; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the in side of a cuff designed to be attached tomy improved shirt-sleeve;
A represents the wristband of a shirtsleeve, which is sewed to the sleeve in the usual manner. The two ends of the wristband are designed to be secured together by an ordinary removable sleeve-button B, passed through buttonholes provided in each end of the wristband.
0 represents straps sewed in between the wristband and shirt-sleeve, and each of these straps are provided with a series of buttonholes D, and the end of the strap is provided with a buttonhole E.
F is a spring-clasp of the ordinary construction rovided with a rin F secured to also through the buttonhole E, so as to attach the clasps to the straps, as shown in Figsbl and 2. Thus by utilizing the difierent buttouholes D the straps can be lengthened or shortened, as desired, and the shirtsleeve may be shortened by allowing the clasps to grasp'the material of the shirtsleeve at any point desired, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
G is a cult designed to be attached to the wristband, and this cuff has on itsinner edge one half of a snap-button, usually called glove-buttons, as represented at H, and located in the middle of the inner edge of the cuff. Another half of the glove-button is secured in one corner of the inner edge of the cuff, as represented at I, and the other corner of the cuif is provided with an opening J. The wristband is provided with the other half of the glove-buttons, as represented at I and H, H being secured at the rear of the wristband or opposite the opening of the same, so that to attach the cuif to the wristband the part H of the glove-button is pressed over the snap upon the part H upon the wristband, and the ends of the cud are then brought together and the opening J passes over the part I" and then the part I is pressed over the snap upon the part I,
thus securing the cuff to the wristband. The clasps F are made removable forthe purpose of allowing for the laundering of the shirts.
The advantage of my invention is that the cuffs may be attached to the wristband much more quickly and easily than in the ordinary manner, and by attaching to the wrist band in the two places will be held properly in place, and by providing the straps and clasps the cuif can be adjusted .by .shortening the shirt-sleeve, so as to protrude from the coat-sleeve the desired distance.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown, as slight linner edge of the cuff in the center and in modifications could be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is In combination with a shirt-sleeve and calf therefor, straps secured to the wristband, spring-clasps adjustably and removahly secured to the free end of said straps, two snap-buttons, one half of the button secured t0 the wristband at the front and rear, the other half of the button secured to the i one corner, the other corner of the 01111 being provided with an opening, substantially i 5 as described and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SOPHIA OTTILLIA GRAVE.
