Abstract

Fasteners permanently attached to sleeves of garments allowing the sleeves to be shortened, preferably without undoing the cuff or rolling the sleeves. The fasteners are preferably located on the front of the sleeve, the mechanism being separate but compatibly interactive components such as buttons and buttonholes, poppers, hook and bar, toggle and loop, tabs, ties, ribbons and the like. The fasteners preferably may be done and undone, making the shortening of the sleeves optional, temporary and adjustable.

TITLE: Garment Sleeve Shortening Mechanism
DESCRIPTION
BACKGROUND :
This invention is a solution to a common problem. Shirt sleeves are often found to be too long; they extend too far beyond suit sleeves especially when arms are holding a car steering wheel or when checking a watch and can generally look untidy. It is both a practical and aesthetic issue. See Figure 1.
The various gestures of the hands and arms to move the shirt sleeve further up can be frequently witnessed.
A pitfall in mass production within the fashion industry is it's inability to cater for individual shapes and sizes. Therefore any mechanism integrated into a garment which enables topical size adjustment is valuable. Specifically, the question of the correct shirt sleeve length worn under a jacket is widely discussed in menswear. Attaining the correct length of shirt sleeve is ultimately up to the individual, but only if they have a way to adjust it.
STATEMENT OF INVENTION:
This invention is a mechanism to shorten sleeves which can be both securely done and undone, making it optional as well as adjustable. It is integrated into the garment. The mechanism is positioned on the front section of the sleeve; it involves a combination of separate but compatibly interactive parts which when combined create a fold that reduces the length of the sleeve.
In this example illustration one buttonhole and 2 buttons are used as the components on a shirt. The buttons are positioned longitudinally above the buttonhole. See Figure 2. By bringing either button down into the buttonhole a fold is made in the sleeve, thereby shortening it. See Figures 3 and 4. The staggered distance between the two buttons provides two options for the degree of shortening.
This mechanism could easily be achieved using alternative components such as poppers, hook and bar, toggle and loop, tabs, ties/ ribbons etc. The number of components used to provide options for the degree of shortening is discretionary.
ADVANTAGES :
Consumer: The shortening mechanism is easy to operate. It is visually unobtrusive, in fact arguably attractive. Crucially, it is comfortable to wear. Research has shown, it is the answer to a question which many people are asking and logic suggests it is bound to benefit a large portion of the shirt consumer base.
Manufacturer: The illustration provided is ready for practical application as the components of the mechanism are already part of the production line in shirt manufacture. Therefore the only additional cost is the time taken to do extra repetitions of existing procedures: stitching/cutting buttonhole x 1/ applying button x2.
Fashion Brand: This invention has great potential within the apparel market. It offers fashion houses the ability to present their customers with a completely new function on a garment. The practical advantage is paramount, however it also has aesthetic values. Initially a specific brand could benefit as the mechanism would be a unique selling point. This could then exert a pulling power, instigated by the consumer, on other brands. Eventually the result could be that it becomes a standard feature on all shirts.
