JAMES A. FLOMERFELT, OF NEYV YORK, N. Y.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,712, dated November 4, 1884.
Application filed February 7, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES A. FLOMERFELT, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
I will describe in detail a button embodying my improvement, and then point out its various features in claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a button embodying my improvement, and a sectional view of the wristband of a shirt and a cufl'united thereby; and Fig. 2 is a side view ofa button of modified form embodying my im irovement, and a sectional view of the wristband of a shirt and a cuff united thereby.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures.
The buttons shown in the drawings several ly have two heads, BB, and a shoe, A, united by a common shank, C.
In Fig. 1 the shoe A is shown as arranged about midway between, although rearward of, the heads B B, whereas in Fig. 2 the shoe A is shown as arranged approximately opposite one of the heads B B.
my improvement, at an angle to each other and to the shoe A. in any suitable manner, and is of uniform thickness from side to side. As here shown, it comprises a bar, a, extending from the shoe A to the head B, a bar, a, eitending from the head A to the head B, and a bar, 72, extend ing from the bar a to the bar a. The shoe A is passed through the button-holes in a wristband, I), the head B is passed through one button-hole in a cuff, E, and the head B is passed through another button-hole in the opposite edge of the cuff E.
The buttons which I have shown and described are especially intended for fastening ordinary reversible cuffs to wristbands in such manner that link-studs may be properly used in buttou-holes at the outer ends of the cuffs.
Cuffs have been made in a particular way to adapt them for use with link-studs in the button-holes at the outer ends. Such cuffs have had extending, from them, near the inner ends, tabs provided with button-holes for engaging with buttons fitted in button-holes in wristbands. Owing to the tabs, these cuffs can be fastened to the wristbands without be The heads B B j are shown as arranged, in both examples of? l B permanently and rigidly secured to an in- The shank C may be made ing caused to lap at the outer ends, or even meet there. These cuffs are of course in capable of being reversed. Oftentimes it happens to be desirable to use linkstuds in the ordinary reversible cuffs; but with an ordinary button for uniting such cuffs to wristbands the cuffs would be caused to lap at the outer ends, and hence would not look well with link-studs applied in the button-holes near the outer ends.
Vhen my improved button is used for securing a cuff to a. wristband, the edges of the cuff containing the button-holes, with which the heads B B are engaged, will be held apart, and consequently the opposite edges of the cuff near the outer end will be held apart in a manner which will adapt them for the use ofa link-stud in the outer button-holes. The outer ends of the opposite edges of an ordinary reversible cuff will by my button be held apart just as the tabs on a euif specially made for link-studs will hold the corresponding parts of such cuff apart.
My improved button may be used to fast en collars to the neckband of a shirt, if desirable.
It may be found desirable to omit the shoe A for some purposes, and leave the heads B termediat'c shanln Such modified structure can be used as a linkstud. When the three heads are used, any or all may be hinged to the shank or detachably connected to the shank.
The arrangement of the heads B B at an angle to each other adapts them for uniting the edges of a cuff or collar when such article is bent into circular form.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A button having two heads and a shoe joined together by a common shank of uniform thickness from side to side, the two heads being arranged at an angle to each other and to the shoe, substantially as specified.
2. A button having the shank G, of uniform thickness from side to side, heads B B, rigidly affixed thereon at an angle thereto, and the shoe A, also rigidly atlixed to said shank, substantially as specified.
.T. A. FLOMERFELT.
