SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,618, dated September 28, 1897. Application filed November 24, 1896. Serial No. 613,245. (No model.)

Beit known that I, HERVEY Z. KIMBALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Double Collar-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in double collar-buttons, and has for its object to so construct a device of this description as to permit its ready attachment to a shirt-band and the attachment of the ends of the collar thereto without said ends overlapping,thereby reducing the length of the buttons to which said ends are secured.

lVith these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafterset forth, and then specifically designated by the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, its construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in whicl1 Figure 1 illustrates the application of my improvement to a shirt and collar. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the collar-button, the swinging section of the rear disk swung open; Fig. 3, a similar View with said section closed, and Fig. 4 an edge View of the device.

In carrying out my invention I provide a yoke A, to which is secured or with which is formed the shank B, said shank having a section 0 of a disk secured thereto, to which is pivoted at D the swinging section E. This last-named section is provided with a detent F at the opposite end from that by which it is pivoted, and this detent is arranged to enter into engagement with the depression G upon the section 0, whereby it will be locked in posit-ion. This arrangement is for facilitating the engagement of the disk thus formed With the buttonhole of the collar-band, and it will be seen that when the section E is swung open it will more readily pass through said buttonhole, and after the section C has also been passed through said hole the section E is closed and looked, as before described, thus securely holding the shank D within the buttonhole, 'the yoke lying upon the outside of the neckband and lengthwise thereof. If it is desired, the section E maybe split or divided, as shown in Fig. 4, so that it incloses both sides'of section 0, thereby rendering a firm and substantial engagement.

Projecting from the ends of the yoke are the buttons H, adapted to pass through the ment is used the collar will be more firmly and neatly held in place than by the use of the old form of button, and since but one end of the collar is attached to each of the buttons this attachment is rendered exceedingly easy of accomplishment.

Another advantage gained by myimprovement is that, since the ends of the collar do not overlap, a necktie will fit more snugly against the front of the collar, thus improving the appearance thereof.

Another advantage of my improvement is that should a collar be somewhat too small for the collar-band of the shirt it may still be secured in place without inconvenience or affecting its appearance.

Still another advantage of my improvement is that the collar will be more securely held in place, while at the same time being permitted to freely move with the motions of the neck of the wearer. While I have here shown a peculiar arran geinent of the rear button for engagement with the buttonhole of the neckband, it is obvious that this may be varied or that the ordinary form of button may be utilized at this point, and I have found by experiment that a variety of designs might be substituted therefor, and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown and described.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new and useful is- 1. In combination with the shank of a collar-button, a section of a disk secured thereto, and a similar section pivoted to the firstnamed disk, as and for the purpose described.

2. In combination with the shank of a collar-button, a section of a disk secured thereto, a similarly-formed section secured to the first-named disk and means for retaining the section last named in a closed position, as and for the purpose described.

3. In combination, a yoke A, a shank B projecting from the center thereof, a section 0 carried by said shank, a section E pivoted to the first-named section, and two buttons projecting from the ends of the yoke in an opposite direction from the shank B, as shown and described. I

4. In a collar-button, a semicircular section of a disk secured to the end of the shank of said button, asimilarly-formed section secured to one corner of the first-named section, a detent formed on one of said sections adapted to engage a depression in the other, as and [or the purpose described.

5. In combination, a yoke, a shank projecting from the center thereof, a section of a disk carried by said shank, a similar section pivoted at one corner to the first-named section, a detent formed on one section adapted to engage a depression in the other, and two buttons projecting from the ends of the yoke on the opposite side from the shank, substantially as described.
