Description

No. 730,017. I I PATENTBDJUNE .2, 1903.
' H- J. HELBERG; SUARF FASTENER. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 21, 1902.
no MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented June 2, 1903.
HJALMAR JOHANN HELBERG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SCARFrFASFIEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7 30,( )17, dated June 2, 1903.
' Application filed November 21, 1902. Serial No: 132,291, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HJALMAR J OHANN HEL- BERG, of New York, State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Scarf-Fasteners, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like numerals on the drawings designating like parts.
It is a common practice to use as a fastener for scarfs of the type having two end portions hanging down over the shirt-bosom an ordinary spring-clip the jaws of which are sprung upon one or both of the end portions of the scarf and upon a plait, fold, or free edge of the shirt-bosom, to which the end portion or portions will thus be secured. If, however, only one end portion is thus secured, the other will be left free to dangle in the way of the wearer and often interferes with the freedom of his m0vement,'or by dragging over ink, greasy surfaces, or in the path of machinery renders itselfand its wearer liable to injury. If the clip is securedover both portions, its appearance is unsightly and that of the scarf untidy,'the scarf portions lying one directly over the other ina' stiff constrained position and both at one side of the central line of the shirt-bosom.
My invention contemplates the provision of such a device with a prong or like'scarf-holding device projecting downwardly from the clip to engage the inner surfaceof the front end portion of the scarf, so that the latter will be held positively in desired position, covering the clip entirely when inoperative position.
The various features of my invention will be illustrated and described fully in the accompanying drawings and specification and set forth in the claims;
In the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates a scarfholder in the construction of which lniytimprovements have been embodied, Fig. 2 showing the same in place ready to'recei've the front end portion of the scarf-y-and'Fig. shows the scarf as it appears when the holder is in operative position.
In the embodiment of my invention selected as a convenient form for illustration and description to enable a ready and complete understanding of my improvements the reference-numeral 1 designates a clip which may be of any convenient form and is illus= trated as a spring-clip of well-known form. having jaws 2, pivoted together at 3 and provided with a closing-spring 4. In accordance with my inventiona sharp prong 5 is provided to enter'the front end portion of the scarf and the operation of which will be understood from Figs. 2 and 3, where the jaws of the clip are shown as embracing the rear end portion 6 of a scarf and the plait or free-division edge 7 of a shirt bosom. Fig. 3 shows the scarf in adjusted position covering up the clip, the prong of which projects downward across the outer face of said clip, adjacent and parallel to the jaws thereof, and enters into the rear surface of the front end portion 8 of the scarf I and holds it against displacement from the desired position, which may be adjusted to a nicety to meet the taste of the wearer. Preferably the prong will lie closely against the material of the jaw from which it projects to hold the material of the scarf frictionally, so that when the wearer bends over any slight tendency to escape will be obviated; but this and other features unessential to my invention may be varied, aswill occur to those skilled in the art, and Ido not limit myself in general otherwisethan as set forth in the claims read in connection with this specifi=- cation. b
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A scarf-fastener comprising a clip to receive one end portion of the said scarf and a portion of the shirt-front, to hold the former in place relatively to the I latter, and a sharp prong fixed to said clip and presenting a free end projecting downwardly across the outer face of said clip, adjacent and permanently parallel to the jaws thereof to enter the under surface of the other end portion of said scarf, said clip being completely covered byxsaid scarf portion when in operative position,'substantially as described v Signed at New York, 111 the county of New York and State of New York, this 18th day of November, A. D. 1902.
